The Daily Advertiser Athlete of the Week: Ascension Episcopal Brooke Gill

After a week of voting, the Daily Advertiser Athlete of the Week for the week of Sept. 23-29 is Brooke Gill of Ascension Episcopal swimming. In an online poll that closed on Friday, Gill received more than 70% of votes cast for a total of 4,851 votes.

The senior swimmer earned this recognition after she played a huge role in helping the Blue Gators snag bronze overall at the 2024 High School Meet Five on Sept. 24. Gill took home gold in the 100-yard freestyle finishing with a time of 55.93 seconds. She followed that up with another first place finish in the 200-yard freestyle beating out all other swimmers by about five seconds.

Gill swam the 200-yard freestyle in two minutes and 4.95 seconds. She didn't stop there, swimming in Ascension Episcopal 200-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle relays which finished in third place. Gill's stellar swimming for the Blue Gators, and in club swim, has her ranked No. 5 in the Class of 2025 recruits.

She is the highest ranked Lafayette-area female swimmer in this class with a power index of 25.65. Gill will look to continue to shine in her last season if high school swim before she finds her home at a four-year university.

Original story: With another week of high school sports in Lafayette Parish and its surrounding area in the books, it’s time to vote for the Daily Advertiser’s Athlete of the Week.

For 337 football, district play kicked off this past week reviving teams' dreams of bringing a district championship back to their respective schools. In other sports, non-district play is still in full swing as they look to prepare for district play.

As we approach the midseason of fall sports, these six athletes have showcased their talents earning them a spot in this week’s poll.

The poll includes athletes from the following fall sports: football, swimming and girls volleyball. The poll can be found at the bottom of the story and closes on Friday.

Here are the candidates for Athlete of the Week for Sept. 23-29 (athletes listed in alphabetical order):

Riley Antoine, girls volleyball, Westgate: In a close match against Lafayette Renaissance Christian Academy on Sept. 26, Antoine did everything she could to help her team win 3-2. She racked up a team-high five kills and four aces.

Caden DiBetta, football, Acadiana: The Wreckin’ Rams bulldozed New Iberia and senior quarterback DiBetta led the charge. He finished the game with two passing touchdowns and a rushing score helping Acadiana route the Yellow Jackets 62-0.

Derrick Collins, football, Southside: Southside’s defense was locked in to kick off class 5A District 3 play against Lafayette on Sept. 27. Senior defensive back Collins snagged two interceptions to help hold the Lions scoreless all game.

Brooke Gill, swimming, Ascension Episcopal: At the Southwest Louisiana High School Swim League Meet on Sept. 24, Gill was the Top Power Point Scorer. The senior racked up 55.93 points helping the Blue Gators finish third overall as a team.

Sage Jones, girls volleyball, Teurlings Catholic: During the Rebels' tournament play on Sept. 27, Jones was on fire against Northshore. The senior outside hitter led her team with 10 kills and an ace as they beat the Panthers 2-0.

Luke Landry, football, Catholic - New Iberia: Against a tough Notre Dame team on Sept. 27, Landry couldn’t be stopped. The 6-foot senior quarterback threw for 311 yards and a whopping five touchdowns, helping the Panthers beat the Pioneers 42-28.

All high school varsity players from Lafayette, Acadiana, St. Landry, St. Martin, and Iberia parishes are eligible to be placed on the ballot. Nominations must be received by Monday morning following that week's games for consideration.
