Treylon Burks will 'absolutely have to contribute' on Tennessee Titans special teams in 2024
The Tennessee Titans are going to find a way to get Treylon Burks on the field in Year 3, even if it's not as a wide receiver.
Burks took a few reps on special teams at Tuesday's Titans minicamp practice, spending time as the "gunner," or end man on the line of scrimmage on punt coverage whose job is to dart toward and contain the return man. As Titans coach Brian Callahan explained, roles like that are ones he expects Burks to excel at, and places he can make himself valuable.
"Absolutely he's going to have to contribute (on special teams)," Callahan said. "You only have so many hats on game day. If he's one of those guys on game day, we're going to have to find a place for him. Guys like him should be great special teams players on top of it just because of his size and speed. The gunner thing is something I think he's very capable of doing. There might be some more roles for him in the other phases as well. Anytime you're not a full-time starter, you're going to have to contribute somewhere on game day. Treylon's attitude has been fantastic, and I'm excited to see what he can do."
TWEAK: Tennessee Titans are slightly tweaking quarterback Will Levis' mechanics. Here's why
The Titans took Burks in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft as the presumed replacement for A.J. Brown. But Burks has failed to emerge as a top option through two injury-plagued seasons, leading to the Titans signing veterans DeAndre Hopkins, Calvin Ridley and Tyler Boyd to fit above him on the depth chart.
Callahan has insisted his offense will have a role for Burks, and he has been impressed by Burks' presence throughout OTAs and minicamp. But the push to use Burks on special teams as well is new. He took only 25 reps on special teams in his first two seasons, and just one of those came last year. All 25 have been on return units as well; he hasn't taken a snap on a coverage team since his junior year at Arkansas, and hasn't been on the field for more than one coverage snap in the same game since Week 4 of his sophomore year.
Callahan also indicated that cornerback Caleb Farley, the Titans' first-round pick in 2021, will take reps on special teams. This isn't necessarily new, though. A little more than one-third of Farley's snaps with the Titans have come on special teams.
