6 observations from Tennessee Titans practice, including Will Levis and Caleb Farley

The Tennessee Titans opened Wednesday's OTA practice to media, giving just the second glimpse at new coach Brian Callahan's squad, and the last before mandatory minicamp practices begin next week.

Quarterback Will Levis headlines the cohort of Titans who were present for Wednesday's voluntary sessions, joined by offensive weapons like Calvin Ridley, Tyler Boyd, Tyjae Spears and Tony Pollard as well as additions on the offensive line JC Latham and Lloyd Cushenberry III. The group of defenders present included edge rusher Arden Key and cornerbacks Chidobe Awuzie and Roger McCreary.

Here are six observations from Wednesday's Titans OTAs.

Tracking Will Levis, the Tennessee Titans quarterbacks

As was the case last week, the Titans only practiced one period of team drills, a 7-on-7 passing session. Second-year quarterback Will Levis was 6-for-9 passing on his 10 reps, having to tuck and run because of good coverage on the 10th rep. Wednesday's practice revolved around simulating third-down scenarios, so many of Levis' completions were checkdowns or quick slants and outs. But he did connect on two impressive throws: a post through tight coverage caught by slot receiver Mason Kinsey and a deep fade down the sideline whizzed with perfect precision over the shoulder of a cornerback who didn't have time to whip his head around.

Two of Levis' incompletions could have been intercepted, one because of an errant throw and the other because his receiver fell down mid-route.

First-rounder vs. first-rounder (finally)

One of the highlight moments of the 7-on-7 period came when Levis threw to receiver Treylon Burks on a sideline fade route similar to the one mentioned above. Burks was blanketed by coverage from Caleb Farley on the route, but Levis threw anyway. Farley did an impressive job of limiting Burks' catch radius and ensuring the incompletion, despite good ball placement from Levis.

It's been a long time since Farley's been able to flash the talent that made him a first-round pick in 2021, but the talent was on display for one play Wednesday. Burks did make one impressive catch from Levis in 7-on-7 though, taking a quick slant and carving through the middle of the defense for what likely would've been a big gain if pads were on.

Familiar name shows promise

Cornerback Gabe Jeudy-Lally took some significant 7-on-7 reps lining up in man coverage against star receiver Calvin Ridley. And in those four reps, Ridley wasn't targeted once.

Jeudy-Lally, an undrafted free agent from Tennessee, will have to beat out a number of veterans to find his way onto the 53-man roster, including returning contributors like Tre Avery, Eric Garror, Anthony Kendall and Farley. But he's getting opportunities to prove himself early in his tenure.

Another rookie getting better

Rookie receiver Jha'Quan Jackson, a sixth-round pick out of Tulane, made a couple of nice catches. One came on a high throw in an individual period that he showed enough body control to leap and bring down. Another came on a quick out jetted his way by quarterback Malik Willis on one of the simulated third downs in 7-on-7.

Notable absences: Jeffery Simmons, DeAndre Hopkins, more

Wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins was not present, missing the second open OTA day after attending the first one last Tuesday. Defensive tackles Jeffery Simmons and T'Vondre Sweat, linebackers Kenneth Murray and Harold Landry, cornerback L'Jarius Sneed and offensive tackles Nicholas Petit-Frere and Jaelyn Duncan were also absent, continuing the trend from last week.

Notable presence: Eddie George visits

Tennessee State coach, and one of the best players in Titans history, Eddie George was present for Wednesday's practice. The former running back walked around the practice fields in Tennessee State garb for a little while, watching some of the early individual drills.
