Three Clemson football players selected to preseason All-ACC team, including Barrett Carter
CLEMSON — Linebacker Barrett Carter was one of three Clemson football players selected to the preseason All-ACC team, according to a release from the conference Thursday.
Carter was the leading vote-getter for the Tigers, named on 129 of the ballots cast by a panel of 170 media members. He also finished third in the ACC preseason player of the year vote, receiving 15 votes.
The senior, who made the preseason all-conference team last season, logged 62 tackles (9.5 for loss), 3.5 sacks, six pass deflections and one interception in 12 games in 2023 to make All-ACC second team. Carter was joined by safety R.J. Mickens on the defensive side.
Mickens recorded 42 tackles and three pass deflections in 2023 and returns for his fifth season. Tackle Blake Miller was the only Clemson offensive player named to the first team. He has started in every game of his Tigers career.
The Tigers’ three selections ended the team's nine-year streak of having the most first-team all-conference selections. Miami had the most with five. Clemson has had 77 first-team selections during that span – 35 offensive players, 38 defensive players and four specialists, including two kickers.
Miami quarterback Cam Ward was voted preseason Player of the Year, receiving 71 votes. North Carolina running back Omarion Hampton was second with 38 votes.
The Tigers had seven preseason selections last year as they went 9-4 in 2023, their fewest wins since 2010. Their 2024 schedule features home games against NC State, Stanford, Louisville and South Carolina and road games against Florida State, Wake Forest, Virginia Tech and Pittsburgh.

The preseason selections were conducted by a vote from a media panel, including all credentialed media members at ACC Kickoff. These projections come after Clemson was picked to finish second in the conference behind Florida State in the ACC preseason poll Wednesday.
Clemson begins preseason practices Thursday before opening the 2024 season against Georgia on Aug. 31 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
