As Texas and Texas A&M prepare to resume rivalry, Lone Star Showdown gets a new sponsor

HOUSTON — When Texas football and Texas A&M football meet at Kyle Field on Nov. 30, they will do so in the rebranded Lone Star Showdown.

It was announced Thursday that Cotton Holdings, Inc. will be the title sponsor for the Texas-Texas A&M football game when the series resumes this fall after a 13-year hiatus. According to the Houston-headquartered company's website, Cotton Holdings, Inc. "provides property restoration and recovery, construction, roofing, consulting, workforce staffing, temporary housing and culinary services to public and private entities worldwide."

Thursday's announcement about the "Cotton Lone Star Showdown" — which is a series that will include not just football but other sports as well — was made at a joint new conference attended by both Texas athletic director Chris Del Conte and his counterpart at Texas A&M, Trev Alberts. Former Texas A&M football coach R.C. Slocum was also in attendance.

"Rekindling our historic rivalry with Texas A&M and bringing that back for not only our fans but fans of college sports across our great state, the country, and the world, is so special. And we’re so grateful our friends at Cotton Holdings are on board to help amplify that with the Lone Star Showdown rivalry series. I know our fans are going to follow the standings closely," Del Conte said in a news release.

"The 12th Man is ready for the return of the Lone Star Showdown, and Cotton Holdings is the ideal title sponsor of a rivalry series of this stature," Alberts was quoted as saying. "Texas A&M Athletics has a long history with Cotton Holdings, and it is a home-grown, Texas-based company with a global impact. We are proud to partner with an organization that shares our values and commitment to excellence."

The Cotton Lone Star Showdown won't just focus on football. The first installment of this new-look series will actually include the schools' volleyball programs Sept. 27. The football game, though, was the reason why media members were invited Thursday to The Capital Grille in Houston.

When Texas visits Texas A&M, 4,755 days will have passed since the last game between the Longhorns and Aggies. Texas holds a 76-37-5 lead in a series that began in 1894. In its history, Texas has only played more games against Oklahoma (119 games) than it has against Texas A&M. Texas remains by far the most-played team in Texas A&M's history.

To date, Justin Tucker's 40-yard field goal to secure a 27-25 win over the Aggies on Nov. 24, 2011 remains the last memory of the Texas-Texas A&M series. Three years ago, Tucker told the American-Statesman that he was looking forward to the resumption of the rivalry.

"I've always been a big supporter of the idea of the teams playing each other ever since A&M departed for the SEC and Texas remained in the Big 12," Tucker said. "I’m a big believer in let the teams play, let the players play, let the coaches coach and let the chips fly, and let them fall where they may. Everybody watching that game will be better for it because the experience is fantastic. It's just such a great, storied rivalry.

"I've been asked before if I care if the game is played again because I won't necessarily have the last laugh or bragging rights or anything like that. Like, I don't care about that. I just want to see great football being played between one great program and its little brother."
