Texas pass interference vs Georgia overturned after Longhorns fans throw trash on field

Saturday's top-five SEC showdown between No. 1 Texas and No. 4 Georgia was delayed due to Texas fans throwing trash onto the field at DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium following a controversial defensive pass interference call against the Longhorns.

That delay may have led directly to an overturn of the penalty, which eventually came to hurt the Bulldogs.

At the 4:22 mark of the third quarter, Georgia quarterback Carson Beck was intercepted for the third time of the game. However, officials called defensive pass interference against Longhorns cornerback Jahdae Barron, despite it seeming like there was equal contact by both him and Arian Smith.

The penalty caused quite a lot of frustration from Texas coach Steve Sarkisian and fans inside the stadium, resulting in Longhorns fans throwing trash onto the field. Sarkisian eventually had to enter the field and tell fans to stop throwing trash.

During the delay on the field, officials overturned the penalty — a rarity of its sort. ESPN rules analyst Bill Lemonnier said on the ABC broadcast that the officials did the correct thing in overturning the call, which by rule is not reviewable.

"I think someone had the guts to step up and talk about the call. They had to delay (the game) because of all the bottles on the field, but they got together and did the right thing," Lemonnier said.

The reversal meant Texas' Jahdae Barron's 36-yard return on the interception was enforced, setting the Longhorns up in the red zone. Two plays later, Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers connected with Jaydon Blue for a 17-yard touchdown pass to bring the game within eight points.
