Texas A&M football vs. Notre Dame: Aggies grades in Week 1 loss

Texas A&M football was not at its best on Saturday night, falling to Notre Dame 23-13.

The Aggies took an early 6-3 lead but were outscored 20-7 from there and had few answers on offense

Here's how the Aggies graded out in Mike Elko's debut:

Quarterback: D

It was pretty bad. During Texas A&M's 65-yard drive that ended in a touchdown, the quarterback threw three incompletions and rushed twice for 8 yards. He had a few nice throws in the first quarter and his legs were effective at points. However, Weigman's two interceptions were completely his fault, no tipped balls or miscommunications with receivers.

Running back: B-

They weren't spectacular, but LeVeon Moss, E.J. Smith and Amari Daniels powered A&M's only touchdown drive of the game.

Facing a strong Notre Dame defensive line, the trio amassed 114 of the Aggies' 246 yards of total offense. Moss also caught two balls for 13 yards and helped keep Weigman mostly clean in pass protection.

Receivers: D+

While Weigman wasn't able to get into a rhythm for most of the night, he doesn't deserve all the blame. None of the receivers were able to separate against a stingy Irish secondary.

Jahdae Walker was most effective, with six catches for 31 yards. But even he had a careless mistake, drawing a false start on a third-and-1 play.

Offensive line: C+

A&M's offensive line deserves credit for only allowing one sack against a fearsome Notre Dame pass rush Where they fell short was the run game. The line was not able to create holes for their running backs, severely hampering the Aggies' ability to gain easy yardage. They did their job for the most part, though they lose half a grade because of how much the backs helped them in pass protection.

Defensive line: B-

The defensive line's first half deserves an A, as they held the Irish's runners to 65 yards. They followed it up with a C- second half as Notre Dame rushed for 133 yards and scored two touchdowns.

Nic Scourton had a few splash plays and finished with 1½ tackles for loss. Shemar Turner was also solid, collecting seven total tackles and .5 tackles for loss.

TAKEAWAYS: Conner Weigman hurt the Aggies, his NFL draft stock vs. Notre Dame

Linebackers: C

Taurean York took responsibility for the defensive collapse after the game, saying that it all started with him. York had nine tackles, but he missed a tackle on the biggest play of the game: the long touchdown run by Jadarian Price. Overall, the linebackers still made tackles and had a part in limiting yards after the catch on the quick throws Notre Dame attempted throughout the game.

Secondary: C+

The A&M secondary held up well against Leonard, who wasn't able to hit any big pass plays down the field. Tyreek Chappell, Dezz Ricks, Will Lee III and Marcus Ratcliffe all combined for three tackles for loss. However, they played a little too soft on a Notre Dame team that was committed to short passing. They lose half a letter grade for Dalton Brooks' targeting call that got him ejected.

Special teams: A-

Tyler White will be a legitimate weapon for the Aggies if he keeps punting like this. He averaged 54 yards per punt, with his longest being a 62 yard bomb. Randy Bond hit all three of his kicks, with his longest being a 49 yard boot. The only downside is that the Aggies didn't get much from Terry Bussey on the return game.

Coaching: C-

In Mike Elko's first game coaching the Aggies, he wasn't terrible. He didn't make any egregious coaching mistakes and he managed the clock well enough. For as bad as some of the team did play, it's hard to tie a lot of what happened directly to Elko and his influence. As the season unfolds, so will more about Elko's influence.
