Texas high school football: Akins ends losing streak by hammering Cedar Creek

Akins' long losing streak is over.

The Eagles topped Cedar Creek 42-29 at Bastrop ISD Memorial Stadium in a battle of teams who entered Thursday having lost 26 games in a row.

Dylan Cagle rushed for 297 yards and five touchdowns and Pablo Espinoza Jr. added 108 yards and a score on the ground to pace an Akins offense that attempted five passes out of 53 plays.

Akins trailed 15-14 at halftime before dominating the final two quarters.

After forcing a turnover on downs deep in its own territory early in the third quarter, Akins took the lead for good on its ensuing possession when Cagle crossed the goal line from 37 yards out. His rushing TDs of 8 and 2 yards later in the half, sandwiched Espinoza’s 31-yard scoring sprint as the visitors built a 42-15 lead.

Isaiah Cancino’s 2-yard touchdown run and Blaze Orr’s 19-yard scoring strike to Dakota Baker spurred Cedar Creek in the first half. A 2-point conversion pass to Eduardo Macedo allowed the hosts to hold their lead at the break.

Cagle gained most of his yards in the first half (197), including touchdown runs of 9 and 27 yards.

Orr tossed two touchdown passes to Macedo in the game’s final two minutes.

Akins’ last win came Sept. 30, 2021 when it beat Austin High 20-18. Cedar Creek knocked off Elgin 14-6 that same day.
