Tennessee Titans depth chart projections: Key battle at every position for NFL preseason
The cool thing about a team's first training camp with a new coach is that just about every job on the field feels up for grabs.
The Tennessee Titans report for camp on Tuesday, beginning the five-week journey toward cut day on Aug. 27, when rosters must be trimmed from 90 players to 53. Here at The Tennessean, we'll be monitoring the Titans' roster trends throughout training camp with weekly looks at how the depth chart is coming together.
Today, before things get started, we're going position by position to highlight the likely starters, expected backups and players fighting for roster spots. Here's The Tennessean's pre-training camp projection for what the Titans' depth chart will look like come Aug. 27.
TEAM MADE BETTER? Unpacking ways Jamal Adams makes Tennessee Titans better, and which holes remain unplugged
Tennessee Titans depth chart: Offense
Quarterback
Starter: Will Levis
Backup: Mason Rudolph
Fighting for roster spot: Malik Willis
Battle to watch: The only real conversation is if Willis hangs around for Year 3 in Nashville after two underwhelming seasons.
Running back
Starters: Tyjae Spears, Tony Pollard
Backup: Hassan Haskins
Fighting for roster spot: Julius Chestnut, Dillon Johnson, Jabari Small
Battle to watch: Give Haskins the lead for the backup job at the moment, especially because of his ability to play big and physical. But expect competition, and don't be shocked if four backs find their way on to the roster for the special teams edge.
RB TALK: Replacing Derrick Henry doesn't end with Spears, Pollard: Tennessee Titans search for RB3
Wide receiver
Starters: DeAndre Hopkins, Calvin Ridley, Tyler Boyd
Backups: Nick Westbrook-Ikhine, Treylon Burks, Jha'Quan Jackson
Fighting for roster spot: Mason Kinsey, Kearis Jackson, Kyle Philips, Tre'Shaun Harrison
Injured: Colton Dowell
Battle to watch: Jha'Quan Jackson's ability to hold off practice squad veterans Kinsey, Harrison and Kearis Jackson for playing time will be huge, even if coach Brian Callahan's scheme probably justifies carrying up to eight receivers.
MADDEN TALK: Tennessee Titans all-time 'Madden' NFL team: Building best roster of video game stars
Tight end
Starters: Chig Okonkwo, Josh Whyle
Backup: Nick Vannett
Fighting for roster spot: Thomas Odukoya, Steven Stilianos, David Martin-Robinson
Battle to watch: Based on OTAs and minicamp, it's going to be interesting to see if Whyle and Okonkwo end up playing 1A and 1B roles, or if there's a true featured starter.
TE TALK: Travis Kelce, George Kittle's tight end camp a reminder of Tennessee Titans' weak spot
Tackle
Starters: JC Latham, Nicholas Petit-Frere
Backup: Geron Christian
Fighting for roster spot: Leroy Watson, Jaelyn Duncan, John Ojukwu
Battle to watch: Petit-Frere's name is written here in the lightest of pencil after missing most of last season and on-field offseason activities. Watson, Duncan and Ojukwu (plus Dillon Radunz) all could find themselves anywhere from fighting for that right tackle spot, earning a backup role, on the practice squad or cut.
Guard
Starters: Peter Skoronski, Saahdiq Charles
Backup: Daniel Brunskill, Dillon Radunz
Fighting for roster spot: Lachavious Simmons
Battle to watch: Brunskill is the returning starter at right guard, and he acquitted himself fairly well on a bad unit last year. His value as a backup who can also play center complicates things, but if he's one of the best five, he'll start.
Center
Starter: Lloyd Cushenberry
Backup: Daniel Brunskill
Fighting for roster spot: Andrew Rupcich
Battle to watch: If Brunskill does win the right guard job, can any other options emerge as a possibility at backup center?
Tennessee Titans depth chart: Defense and special teams
Defensive line
Starters: Jeffery Simmons, Sebastian Joseph-Day, T'Vondre Sweat
Fighting for roster spot: Keondre Coburn, Marlon Davidson, Quinton Bohanna, TK McLendon
Battle to watch: Sweat's status in the top tier hasn't really been earned yet, and the gaggle of returning contributors below him all need to do something to separate themselves from the pack.
AMAZING JOURNEY: Melting cleats, walking dogs: Inside Lori Locust's journey from women's football to NFL, Tennessee Titans
Outside linebacker
Starters: Harold Landry, Arden Key
Backup: Rashad Weaver
Fighting for roster spot: Jaylen Harrell, Caleb Murphy, Thomas Rush
Battle to watch: Weaver could make the jump into the top-tier of the rotation, especially if Key needs to play on more of an every-down basis, but the younger trio is nipping at his heels.
Inside linebacker
Starters: Kenneth Murray, Jack Gibbens
Backups: Cedric Gray, Chance Campbell
Fighting for roster spot: Luke Gifford, Otis Reese, Garret Wallow, James Williams
Battle to watch: A lot will be made of whether Gray can overtake Gibbens for a starting role, as it should be, but the fight for Campbell, Gifford and Reese to stay on the squad and Williams to make the team should be just as interesting.
Cornerback
Starters: L'Jarius Sneed, Chidobe Awuzie, Roger McCreary
Backups: Jarvis Brownlee
Fighting for roster spot: Tre Avery, Caleb Farley, Eric Garror, Gabe Jeudy-Lally, Anthony Kendall
Battle to watch: Avery, Farley and Garror all have fascinating cases to make the team, but Jeudy-Lally was undeniably impressive during minicamp and OTAs.
CRUCIAL AREAS: Tennessee Titans copied NFL's best rebuild stories in 1 crucial way, and it should pay off
Safety
Starters: Amani Hooker, Elijah Molden, Jamal Adams
Backup: Mike Brown
Fighting for roster spot: Matthew Jackson
Battle to watch: Adams is a former All-Pro, but he hasn't shown that same skill for a few years now. Does he step in and take over Molden's job, or is Molden still a starter, with Adams coming in for situational work?
Kicker
Starter: Nick Folk
Fighting for roster spot: Brayden Narveson
Battle to watch: Let's not pretend this is a competition, but maybe Narveson can make the practice squad.
Punter
Starter: Ty Zentner
Injured: Ryan Stonehouse
Battle to watch: Not so much a battle as it is a quest to monitor Stonehouse's recovery from knee surgery.
Kickoff/punt returner
Starters: Tyjae Spears, Jha'Quan Jackson, Treylon Burks
Backups: Tony Pollard
Fighting for roster spot: Mason Kinsey, Kyle Philips, Eric Garror, Kearis Jackson, Jabari Small
Battle to watch: The new kickoff rule favors players like Burks and Pollard in the return game. Is this finally the place for Burks to flash his skill set?
