Has Tennessee baseball ever won College World Series? Vols history in NCAA baseball tournament

Editor's note: This story has been updated to reflect the Vols' first national championship.

Tony Vitello has put Tennessee baseball back on the national map over the last five years, and this year's Vols roster may have been his best.

Appearing in its fifth consecutive NCAA baseball tournament, the Vols were tabbed with their second-ever No. 1 overall seed in the tournament in program history — one year after making their second appearance at the College World Series in three years.

One of the nation's top teams all season, as highlighted by consecutively being ranked the No. 1 team in the country week in and week out. The Vols are the favorites to dog pile on the mound inside Charles Schwab Field in Omaha, Nebraska in roughly four weeks, per BetMGM. The Vols lived up to that prophecy, defeating Texas A&M 6-5 in a decisive Game 3 of the championship series to give Tennessee its first baseball national championship.

Here's what you need to know about the Vols history in the NCAA Baseball Tournament and the CWS:

Has Tennessee baseball won the College World Series?

Tennessee won its first ever College World Series national championship Monday, surpassing its previous best finish of runners up.

In what was just the fifth edition of the NCAA baseball tournament in 1951, the Vols did not play in a regional round or super regional round to make the CWS. Instead, Tennessee was one of eight teams selected straight to Omaha. The regional round of the NCAA baseball tournament was not added to its format until 1954, with the super regionals coming in 1999.

To make the championship game against Oklahoma, Tennessee had to play itself out of the "loser's bracket" after dropping its first game to Utah 7-1. The Volunteers went 4-0 in the "loser's bracket" picking up wins against Princeton (3-2), Springfield (2-0), Utah (5-4) and South Carolina (9-8) before taking on Oklahoma in the championship game. The Sooners won 3-2.

Tennessee's 2024 trip culminated in its first ever College World Series victory, with the Vols defeating Texas A&M 6-5 in Game 3 to clinch.
