Striped bass bite in fall run as breezes shift to northwest

The breezes kicked up this week, forcing the hand of fishing boat captains to cancel trips and even stalling the salvage operation of the sunken commercial boat, Susan Rose.

The weekend outlook is brighter as NOAA is calling for a shift to the northwest and air temps to creep back up into the 60s. The boats will be going in a several directions on the hunt for striped bass, sea bass, porgies or offshore for tuna.

Fish Monger II Capt. Jerry Postorino delayed his departure Wednesday morning waiting for the wind to die down enough to take his fishing party out for striped bass. He left his Point Pleasant Beach dock at 10 a.m. and while the ocean was still lumpy the wind dropped out soon enough and they got right into a school of stripers to jig as he worked up the coastline to the north.

He said they were busy from the first drift to the last with fish. They released a bunch of fish that were over the size limit but every one in his party landed a keeper fish plus some bonus tag fish in the old slot size 24 to 28 inches.

Salvage efforts to raise the 77-foot steel commercial trawler Susan Rose from 50 feet of water southeast of Point Pleasant Beach were stopped this week due to the windy, choppy ocean conditions, a spokesperson for Ocean County told the Asbury Park Press.

The vessel, which is owned by The Town Dock in Narragansett, beached last November a couple hundred yards south of Manasquan Inlet. All four crewmembers made it off the boat. A marine salvage company then attempted the tow the boat to a yard in Staten Island but the vessel took on water and sank 3,000 feet from the shoreline. Two salvage companies are now trying to raise the boat with a crane on a barge.

Grumpy's Tackle in Seaside Park reported that surfcasters landed some big striped bass from the beaches in its locale on Thursday morning. Shell E. Caris reeled one in that measured 46 inches which he caught on an AVA jig. The fish was released.

A few of the tackle shops in the Ocean County locales had reported that a bunch of dogfish invaded the surf. The spiny creatures have been attacking the hook baits.

Blackfish bag limit expands to 5 fish on Saturday. That will certainly add to the number of fish bottom fishermen can toss in their coolers. The wreck boats were hampered most by the strong breezes this week. The last time the Paramount was out was Monday and the fishing report was good. Capt. Francis Bogan said most of his fares had their 15-fish sea bass limit. He said the porgies started biting good toward the end of the trip.
