In ESPN's "way too early top-25 poll" from May, South Carolina was ranked No. 1 overall, with UCLA coming up at No. 5.
The last time these two teams met in the regular season was in 2022 also around Thanksgiving, when UCLA traveled to Columbia. The Gamecocks won 73-64. Later that season, South Carolina beat UCLA in the Sweet 16, 59-43 in March 2023.
The 2024-25 UCLA Bruins are led by spark plug Kiki Rice, a sophomore from Maryland and 6-foot-7 Lauren Betts. Rice was one of three players featured in ESPN's docuseries, "Full Court Press" that featured South Carolina's Kamilla Cardoso.
The Bruins added Texas A&M transfer Janiah Barker, who averaged 12.2 games as a sophomore last season. In April, Charlisse Leger-Walker from Washington State announced she was transferring to UCLA for her fifth year. She averaged 13.2 points and 6.5 rebounds per game last year. Timea Gardiner left Oregon State and committed to UCLA in May.
UCLA lost to LSU in the Sweet 16, finishing the year with a 27-7 record. The Bruins were a No. 2 seed in the tournament.
The Gamecocks landed Arkansas transfer Maryam Dauda a 6-foot-4 forward who averaged 10 points last season. South Carolina has three freshmen for the 2024-25 season: Joyce Edwards, Madisen McDaniel and Adhel Tac.
