Dawn Staley, South Carolina women's basketball unveil highway signs that honor 2024 title win

COLUMBIA — It's going to be hard for those driving in South Carolina to forget who won the 2024 women's basketball national championship.

On Tuesday, one of the new highway signs to commemorate the South Carolina women's basketball team's 2024 national championship was unveiled. The sign also lists 2022 and 2017, the two other title-winning years for the Gamecocks. Coach Dawn Staley, South Carolina Secretary of Transportation Justin Powell and athletic director Ray Tanner spoke at the news conference at Colonial Life Arena, where the sign was revealed.

"I'm thankful, I'm very thankful, it's almost surreal," Staley said. "Now the third one, I think it's an honor to represent the state in this way and to be a women's basketball program here. For everyone that supported us, I am honored and I don't think I'll go around looking for it, but when they do catch me off guard, it's a beautiful thing to see."

All signs will be installed by Sept. 30.

Where will South Carolina women's basketball's new signs be located?

A total of 15 signs will go up around the state of South Carolina, with several in Columbia. Locations include the welcome centers near the South Carolina border in both directions on I-85, I-26, I-77 and eastbound I-20.

In Columbia, signs will be at:

  • I-20 eastbound Exit 58 and westbound Exit 73A

  • I-26 Exit 111B in both directions

  • I-77 Exit 5 in both directions

  • at the Harbison Street Ext. intersection of southbound SC-277
