South Carolina football coach Shane Beamer contacts SEC office about calls in loss to LSU
COLUMBIA — South Carolina football coach Shane Beamer reached out to SEC head of officials John McDaid in the aftermath of the 36-33 loss to LSU on Saturday.
South Carolina (2-1, 1-1 SEC) was called for 13 total penalties, seven in the fourth quarter. Two of the penalties called were on interceptions made by the Gamecocks' defense that were returned for a touchdown but then called back. On Beamer's weekly Sunday night call with media, he said he couldn't remember another time where that happened.
Beamer called McDaid before he left Williams-Brice Stadium and added athletic director Ray Tanner talked to the league office on Sunday as well.
"We aren't going to sit around and complain, it's moving onto next week but certainty want to get some clarification on some things from Saturday for sure," Beamer said.
Beamer said he knows McDaid already watches each game and grades the referees' work, so Beamer doesn't normally send in a lot of plays to question.
"We sent a lot in today," Beamer said. "I saw a couple things yesterday that were flags that I've never seen in 25 years of coaching."
When Alex Herrera missed a 49-yard field goal that would have tied the game and forced overtime, Beamer said he noticed two obvious signs of taunting from the Tigers that weren't called.
"I've been told that celebrations were going to be allowed ... but that there is going to be a very clear emphasis on taunting," Beamer said. "For that crew to throw 22 flags and on the last play, I think there are two very clear instances of taunting that happened after the kick and after throwing 22 flags, nobody wanted to throw a flag on that one. It's just things I want to get clarification on, but again there were plenty of things we were wrong about as well."
PENALTIES, SANDERS, SELLERS: South Carolina football has a penalty problem, more overreactions from loss to LSU
On his way off the field, Beamer said he heard fans yelling things like "the game was stolen from you." It was a message he said he appreciated since it was rooted in support but he did talk to his players about staying away from that mentality.
"We aren't going to seek comfort in telling ourselves that," Beamer said. "I understand what they are saying but at the end of the day we didn't do enough well to win the game. Having said that, we watched the tape with the players today, and they're not blind. They can see some of the calls that went against us, or that we didn't get."
