South Carolina football coach Shane Beamer names LaNorris Sellers starting quarterback

COLUMBIA — South Carolina football coach Shane Beamer provided an update on the starting quarterback battle after making it clear throughout spring practice that no decision had been made.

On Monday, Beamer told reporters during an event in Florence that LaNorris Sellers is the Gamecocks' starting quarterback.

Sellers would take over for Spencer Rattler, the former Gamecocks quarterback who was drafted by the New Orleans Saints on April 27.

"I'll tell you guys what I told LaNorris (Sellers) and all the quarterbacks coming out of spring practice, that coming out of spring practice, Sellers is our starting quarterback," Beamer said.

Beamer added that like every player, Sellers, a redshirt freshman, will have to continue to compete, hinting that the starting role could very easily be taken away from during preseason practice in August.

"Robby (Ashford) did a great job in spring practice as did our other quarterbacks," Beamer said. "I expect Sellers to compete and earn that position as well."

Sellers had a impressive spring game performance on April 20. In two quarters, Sellers was 9-for-11 passing for 70 yards and rushed for 38 yards, including a 13-yard touchdown on the first drive. In 2023, the 6-foot-3 Sellers appeared in three games.

Ashford seemed to be Seller's main competition throughout the spring, as the redshirt senior brings a more experienced résumé. In January, Ashford transferred from Auburn with two years of eligibility remaining. He began his career at Oregon before playing for the Tigers the past two years.
