Saints announce multiple roster moves before Week 10 game vs. Falcons
The New Orleans Saints’ list of roster moves prior to their Week 9 matchup with the Carolina Panthers was quite lengthy, and while this week's prior to their game against the Atlanta Falcons is still quite a few, it is not as negative as the prior week's. Most of the moves made were people returning from injury or just standard practice squad elevations, however the Chris Olave news tied into it is less than optimal.
Here are all of the Saints roster moves prior to their Week 10 game:
S Will Harris and IOL Shane Lemieux activated from injured reserve
Starting off with safety Will Harris, he is now set to make his return after a four-game span without playing due to a hamstring injury. Harris had 16 tackles, 3 pass deflections and an interception in 5 starts before his injury occurred, and he will now have a chance to play a second game against the Atlanta Falcons this season.
Interior offensive lineman Shane Lemieux will also make his return this week after suffering an ankle injury. His only start this season came against the Atlanta Falcons, and we will see if that is the case this week if he replaces Nick Saldiveri at left guard, or if the Saints run with their current rotation instead. Regardless, having depth is never a bad thing.
WR Chris Olave placed on injured reserve
The unfortunate news of this roster move cycle is that Chris Olave was moved onto the injured reserve due to his concussion suffered in Week 9. This precaution is most definitely warranted as he suffered two concussions in a short span of time, and ensuring his health is what must come first in this scenario. There is a chance he may miss the remainder of the season, though that is yet to be seen at this time.
WR Dante Pettis and WR Kevin Austin Jr. elevated from practice squad
With the wide receiver room taking a beating on this Saints team, they made two call-ups from the practice squad. First up was Dante Pettis, who signed back in October with the Saints practice squad and had not been called up as of yet. The veteran presence will be much welcomed in a relatively young and inexperienced group of receivers currently rostered for the Saints.
In addition, the Saints also called up Kevin Austin Jr. who was signed to the practice squad back in August and remained there early on. He will now get a chance to get some playing time as the Saints try to figure out this roster shuffle at the wide receiver position, and find enough players to fill in for other injuries.
C Erik McCoy and LB Nephi Sewell downgraded to out
Center Erik McCoy will have to wait a little longer to make a return after his Week 3 sports hernia, as he was downgraded to out for this matchup. While he was able to return to practice this week in a limited capacity, he ultimately still needs a little more time to get ready to play again. The Saints interior offensive line is finally beginning to get healthy once again though, we will see if McCoy is able to go next week or if they take further precautions in starting him.
Linebacker Nephi Sewell will also wait to make his return from a knee injury, despite being a full practice participant throughout the week. Sewell has not yet played in the 2024 season, and is looking to make his debut in the near future seemingly, but will need some more time to get fully healthy.
RB Alvin Kamara promoted to offensive captain
Finally, the Saints announced that they will be making Alvin Kamara a captain. This follows his extension a few weeks ago and a phenomenal game against the Panthers in Week 9. He was previously a captain in 2022 but was not announced as one in 2023 or for the start of 2024. Mid-season captaincy changes are somewhat uncommon, but with a new interim head coach, the logistics of the move make sense, especially given Kamara is definitely deserving of the title.
