Rockets to hold 2024-25 training camp at new practice facility in Houston

It’s become increasingly obvious in social media posts from the Houston Rockets in recent weeks that the team’s long-awaited new training and practice facility is in use.

On Tuesday, per veteran reporter Kelly Iko of The Athletic, fans got official confirmation. When training camps for the 2024-25 NBA season open on Oct. 1, the Rockets will report to their new facility.

Indeed, as planned, the Rockets have a new state-of-the-art training and practice facility opening up this season. Funded by owner Tilman Fertitta, the $70-million project is located just a few minutes north of The Post Oak Hotel — also owned by Fertitta — along Houston’s I-610 West Loop.

Ever since opening Toyota Center in 2003, the Rockets had trained on a single practice court inside the same building. But Fertitta, who bought the franchise in October 2017, consistently expressed his desire to build a new facility with multiple practice courts and superior training infrastructure.

Now, with the new facility boasting 75,000 square feet of space, the Rockets say they have tripled the size of their former site. Offices for basketball operations executives and staffers are moving to the new complex, as well, with the vacated Toyota Center space being repurposed for the organization’s business operations.

In recent years, with training camp rosters larger than in the regular season, the Rockets had opened camp in regional locations away from Houston with more space — such as facilities in Galveston or on the McNeese State University campus in Lake Charles, Louisiana. But with all the amenities they could need now under their own roof, they’re staying home to begin the 2024-25 campaign.
