Roc Taylor's TD catch is all-time Memphis football moment, other overreactions from Charlotte win

Memphis football beat Charlotte 33-28 on Saturday afternoon at Simmons Bank Liberty Stadium thanks to a timely touchdown drive when the Tigers' season was hanging in the balance.

Seth Henigan's 24-yard touchdown pass to Roc Taylor helped Memphis stave off a 49ers comeback and preserve the Tigers' AAC title hopes.

Here are our overreactions from the game.

Seth Henigan's pass to Roc Taylor will go down in Memphis football history

The Tigers still have plenty that needs to go right if they're going to get to the AAC title game and the College Football Playoff. And plenty happened in Saturday's game that suggests they won't be able to do it.

If Memphis does get there, though? That touchdown pass will be remembered forever. The Tigers would have certainly been eliminated from playoff contention without a touchdown on that drive. And with their backs against the wall, Henigan and Taylor came up with the play that saved Memphis' season.

It was coincidentally similar to last season's game against North Texas, when the Tigers blew a second-half lead, only for Henigan to lead a last-minute drive to save the season.

Henigan finished with 212 yards, two touchdowns and an interception, while Taylor had six catches for 99 yards and the memorable touchdown catch.

Charlotte has a quarterback in Deshawn Purdie

Charlotte coach Biff Poggi started Max Brown at quarterback on Saturday, but what if he had started Deshawn Purdie? The true freshman came in after halftime and turned the whole game around for the 49ers. He passed for 152 yards, one touchdown and one interception during the second half.

He opened up the 49ers' downfield passing game, connecting with receiver O'Mega Blake for a pair of deep pass plays. And he pushed a Memphis defense that has had success most of this season to the absolute brink.

Memphis' running back room is five-deep

Mario Anderson carried a Herculean load Saturday, rushing 32 times for 141 yards in a game he left with an injury. He returned and rushed for a touchdown, but there was an encouraging sign when he was gone.

True freshman Makari Bodiford, who has played sparingly this season, was forced into action with Anderson and three other Memphis running backs injured. And he was excellent, carrying seven times for 73 yards and a touchdown in one drive.

The Tigers will be hoping they'll be more healthy at running back moving forward, but Bodiford could be a future star for Memphis.
