Reviewing EA SPORTS Video Game Treatment Of Ottawa Senators Head Coach Travis Green
With all the detail that goes into video games these days, it's hard to believe that NHL head coaches haven't really been part of it. That all changed in EA SPORTS NHL 25 in the update that came out on Monday.
From EA Sports:
"We’re excited to announce the arrival of all 32 official NHL coaches in EA SPORTS NHL 25, along with their unique personalities and strategies they employ in the real world. This Coaches update will span across a multitude of modes, with the coaches providing their signature schemes and traits to the league.
"Each coach has a slew of attributes that symbolize their real-world strengths. For example, a coach like John Tortorella brings a physical coaching style and specializes in developing veteran players. Additional areas of differentiation include Power Play, PK, Teaching, and Influence. These traits will be important distinctions between how teams play and develop.
"Each coach's actual team history and record will be shown in-game and will be updated based on future teams that they may sign with and results within your franchise mode."
When I first heard about this, I figured all the coaches would look the same, like 32 Agent Smiths from The Matrix.
But, no. EA Sports took a real run at creating actual likenesses for the coaches. Some are good, some are average, and some are, well, judge for yourself.
Fortunately for Ottawa Senators head coach Travis Green, his likeness is one of the better ones. The face is so good that I'm guessing he got scanned at some point. The flow is a little too grey and maybe looks more like a hat, but it's not bad, not compared to others you're about to see.
Green and the Senators are well-regarded by the game, getting As across the board for offense, defense, power play, penalty kill, teaching, and influence. But then as I scrolled around, it seems to be that way for every coach. They don't regard Green as a great fit for the team, though, coming in at a 44 percent fit.
Green will be pleased by how often the game's creators believe he's getting to the gym. The likeness of the 53-year-old has been working the upper body so hard, his suit jacket looks like a tight cardigan.
The bench shots will be cutaways when the user might be looking for reaction after a goal or a fight. Although Green's likeness doesn't talk, it's believed he'll still be more open with sharing injury and roster information than the actual coach. I kid, I kid.
All in all, Green fared extremely well compared to some head coaches. Looking in your direction, John Tortorella.
So there it is. A fun new innovation for you video game junkies, contained in NHL 25's latest update. We leave you now with a look at the entire coaching field. Prepare to be astonished.
