Quinn Ewers injury: What Texas football coach Steve Sarkisian said of QB's outlook

Texas football coach Steve Sarkisian said star quarterback Quinn Ewers suffered an oblique strain Saturday in a 56-7 win over UTSA at Royal-Memorial Stadium.

The severity of that strain is still uncertain, he said.

"Remains to be seen kind of the seriousness of that and the length of that, but that's what it is," Sarkisian said postgame. "There's nothing — you know, we don't think it's anything structural or broken."

Ewers appeared to be favoring his right hand in the early stages of the game before suffering the abdominal strain that ultimately caused his departure.

He played well before the injury, though, completing 14 of his 16 pass attempts for 185 yards and two touchdowns, as well as one interception.

Sarkisian said running back coach Tashard Choice first noticed Ewers' injury after he completed a pass to Gunnar Helm.

"It was so odd, you know; it was a noncontact deal," Sarkisian said.

"We called a run, and he turned and looked at me right away. He just pointed at his stomach and then took the knee."

Arch Manning deputized remarkably in Ewers' absence. The redshirt freshman and former top overall recruit passed for 223 yards, completing 9 of his 12 attempts and finding the end zone four times. He also broke off a 67-yard rushing touchdown.

Texas also got some valuable reps for third-string QB Trey Owens in the blowout win. The true freshman made his first career appearance, going 2 of 4 through the air for 19 yards.

The Longhorns (3-0) have one more nonconference tuneup next week against Louisiana-Monroe before SEC play begins at home against Mississippi State the following week.
