Predicting the New Orleans Saints' practice squad after 2024 roster cuts
We're predicting the New Orleans Saints' practice squad after Tuesday's roster cuts deadline, with the official list being finalized later on Wednesday afternoon. Remember, the practice squad is made up of ten players with three or fewer accrued seasons, six veterans with four or more years' experience, and if applicable, a seventeenth International Player Pathway program member.
There are a couple of new faces added to the mix after we checked in on other teams' moves this week, so let's file this away and see how we did:
OG Matthew Jones (Miami Dolphins)
Jones did well in a similar offense to what the Saints want to run in his first preseason, but was pushed out by the numbers game in Miami. The rookie from Ohio State could be a good fit given his experience at both guard spots.
WR Terrace Marshall Jr. (Carolina Panthers)
The Saints almost drafted Marshall a few years ago but the Panthers got wind of it and leapfrogged them. He could get snatched up on waivers as a former second-round pick but time on the practice squad in a new environment could be good for him.
S Lewis Cine
Injuries have been a major problem for Cine but he's healthy now and that's what matters. It's worth bringing him in to see if the Saints can get more out of him. They have a history of developing defensive backs.
K Charlie Smyth (International Player Pathway)
Maybe Smyth gets poached, but there's a good chance he sticks in New Orleans. You'd be surprised how many teams have young kickers they like on the waiver wire. He just needs more reps to better learn the position.
OT Josiah Ezirim
Ezirim was one of the few rookie draft picks waived this week, but teams won't be lining up at the door for a former late seventh rounder. He should clear waivers and continue to develop on the practice squad.
OG Kyle Hergel
Hergel was a surprise cut -- most of the Saints beat projected him to make the team. He had done really well at right guard and was earning more reps at center and left guard. If he clears waivers he's an easy pick to re-sign.
CB Shemar Jean-Charles
It was surprising to see Jean-Charles waived, too. He had developed into a very solid cover corner this summer and was steadily climbing the depth chart but the team just had too many quality options. They should work to re-sign him if he clears waivers.
DT Jack Heflin
Heflin spent last season on the practice squad, too, and he was very disruptive throughout the preseason. It's worth keeping him around especially if Khalen Saunders has to miss extensive time with his calf injury.
DE Niko Lalos
Lalos is another backup who should return from last year's practice squad. He made more plays than Isaiah Foskey in the preseason and makes sense to stash in case there's an injury at the top of the depth chart.
TE Michael Jacobson
The Saints invested a year in developing Jacobson, the former basketball player, and he could benefit from more time. It's worth stashing another tight end on the practiice squad in case Dallin Holker's ankle injury lingers further than expected.
RB Jacob Kibodi
Kibodi ran hard in the preseason and the Saints could use more depth at running back with Kendre Miller on the mend. But there may be better options available on waivers.
S Johnathan Abram (vested)
Abram could be the Week 1 starter at safety. He initially came up from the practice squad last season before getting signed to the 53-man roster, so he knows how this all goes.
S Ugo Amadi (vested)
Amadi has worn a lot of hats, helping out at safety, nickel, and special teams. He's a good player to keep in the fold.
LB Khaleke Hudson (vested)
Hudson did well this summer but the Saints have an abundance of linebackers. He should return to the practice squad unless he gets a better offer.
LB Andrew Dowell (vested)
Dowell lost last season recovering from a serious knee injury, but he's healthy now and knows the system well. The Saints have leaned on him in the kicking game before.
RB James Robinson (vested)
Robinson is a great scheme fit, and his pro experience is valuable. He'd be a good pick to keep in reserve until Kendre Miller has recovered from his hamstring injury.
WR Equanimeous St. Brown (vested)
The Saints already have six receivers on the 53-man roster but St. Brown could be a good choice as an experienced backup. It's unclear when Mason Tipton will be able to return from his injury.
