Paul Mainieri contract, salary details for newly hired South Carolina baseball coach

South Carolina baseball officially has its coach.

The Gamecocks announced the hiring of Paul Mainieri on Tuesday after multiple reports surfaced Monday of the hiring. The former LSU coach, who is coming out of retirement after last coaching in 2021, is also being paid handsomely by South Carolina.

Mainieri won the 2009 College World Series at LSU in what was then his third season in Baton Rouge. He led the Tigers from 2007-21 before retiring. He was replaced by former Arizona coach Jay Johnson, who last year led the Tigers to the 2023 College World Series tite.

“Paul Mainieri is an outstanding coach, teacher, competitor and someone that I have known for many years,” South Carolina athletic director Ray Tanner said in a news release. “One can judge his success through his many championships, SEC and NCAA, but I see the impact he has made on young men and know he can have that same success here as he has achieved in his career.”

South Carolina parted ways with former coach Mark Kingston after the Gamecocks failed to reach the super regionals. The Gamecocks have not reached the CWS since 2012.

Mainieri will receive $1.3 million per season with the Gamecocks, South Carolina's board of trustees released Tuesday at their meeting to approve Mainieri's hiring.

Mainieri's contract makes him the tied-for eighth-highest paid coach in the SEC, alongsid Mississippi State's Chris Lemonis.

For comparison, Kingston made $695,958 last season — which ranked second-to-last in the conference — and was one of only five SEC coaches to make under $1 million per season.
