South Carolina is reportedly in the process of hiring a new baseball coach.

The Gamecocks are coming off a 37-25 season under Mark Kingston. On June 2, USC was knocked out of the Raleigh Regional in the NCAA Baseball Tournament by JMU. The school announced Kingston's firing on June 3, following a seven-year stint with the Gamecocks. Kingston had a career record of 217-155 overall and 83-96 in the SEC, leading the Gamecocks to four NCAA tournament regionals and two super regionals.

Here's what you need to know about Mainieri, including his career record, CWS appearances and more:

Paul Mainieri's coaching record

Mainieri has a career record of 1,505-777-8 (.659) over 39 seasons of coaching. He began as a head coach at St. Thomas University from 1984-88 before taking on roles with Air Force (1989-94), Notre Dame (1995-2006) and LSU (2007-21). Mainieri had recorded a 641-285-3 (.692) record with the Tigers, including leading the team to a national championship in 2009 and a runner-up finish in 2017.

He was named the National Coach of the Year in 2015. Following the 2021 season, Mainieri, 66, announced his retirement from coaching. He has not held a coaching position for the last three seasons.

Paul Mainieri CWS appearances

The Gamecocks' last appearance in the CWS came in 2012, under coach, now-athletic director Ray Tanner. Since USC last made the CWS, 12 different SEC teams ― including Kentucky making its first appearance in 2024 ― have made the World Series.

South Carolina hopes Mainieri's pedigree can return the Gamecocks to the pinnacle of college baseball and give the program its first national championship since the back-to-back championship runs in 2010 and 2011. The Tigers went 38-23 (13-17 SEC) in Mainieri's final season in 2021 and reached the super regionals.

Paul Mainieri coaching history

Mainieri has had a long, storied career as a college coach. He has had just four stops, but has been serving as a head coach since 1983. His longest stint was with LSU, with whom he spent 15 seasons. LSU was also his last coaching gig, as Mainieri has been out of the sport since after the 2021 season.

  • 1983-88: St. Thomas (FL) (179–121–2, .596)

  • 1989-94: Air Force (152-158, .490)

  • 1995-2006: Notre Dame (533-213-3, .714)

  • 2007-2021: LSU (641-283-3, .693)

Mainieri will enter a college landscape that has changed considerably since 2021. South Carolina, however, is hoping Mainieri can lead the Gamecocks to the success of the 2010 and 2011 seasons, the only two College World Series championships in the program's history.
