Offensive lineman taken by ambulance from Buffalo Bills training camp

There was a troubling scene that took place right after the end of Buffalo Bills practice on a scorching hot Tuesday morning at St. John Fisher University.

Offensive lineman Alec Anderson suffered a heat-related trauma and after he was helped off the field and into the medical tent, an ambulance transported him to a local hospital - the location was not given.

The Bills' PR department sent a text to reporters at 2:20 p.m. with an update, and it said that he was recovering at the hospital and coach Sean McDermott and general manager Brandon Beane spoke with him and he was "in good spirits."

The temperature was in the mid-80s and this might have been the most humid day at camp since the Bills arrived last Wednesday, so the heat index was brutal. And while it was slightly overcast early, the sun was out in full force for the final five practice periods.

Several players went into the medical tent to cool down in cold tubs, but Anderson’s situation was clearly more severe. I happened to be in the vicinity and quarterback Josh Allen came out of the tent and told one of his teammates that he thought Anderson would be OK, and per the update, that appears to be the case.

Coach Sean McDermott was there when the ambulance arrived and he was clearly concerned for Anderson. However, McDermott may also have been worried about the condition of rookie safety Cole Bishop who had to leave the practice early with an undisclosed injury, so yes, it was not a great day for the team.

Offensive lineman Dion Dawkins was scheduled to speak to reporters after practice, and when he was asked about his concern level for Anderson, he said, “It’s not as nerve-wracking as you would think because our medical staff is top tier. Alec is a tough dude. Regardless of what it is, he’ll be all right.”

That was a reference to the Bills’ medical staff that saved the life of safety Damar Hamlin when he suffered a cardiac arrest on the field in Cincinnati back in January 2023.

Obviously, Dawkins has no medical basis to make that statement, but it did seem to be an indication that as soon as Anderson gets IV fluids into his body and takes Wednesday off with the rest of the team, that he’ll be OK and could possibly resume practice Thursday morning.

Cole Bishop injury

As for Bishop, he was hurt during an 11-on-11 period but it was difficult to figure out what happened, and while McDermott wasn’t available for comment, general manager Brandon Beane didn’t seem too worried when he told several reporters that it was an injury situation, meaning it wasn’t heat-related like Anderson. However, Bishop was spotted later on campus with arm heavily wrapped.

Bishop has a great opportunity to make a move to become a starter because veteran Mike Edwards is going to miss several weeks due to a hamstring injury. Bishop had many reps with the first-team defense Tuesday and made a nice pass breakup of a deep Allen pass intended for Tyrell Shavers.

The Bills signed veteran safety Kareem Jackson on Monday and he was at the practice but did not participate in the 11-on-11 drills. The 36-year-old has played 14 seasons and 203 games in the NFL with the Texans and Broncos and has 22 interceptions. If Bishop joins Edwards on the sidelines for an extended period of time, Jackson will be competing primarily with Hamlin to join Taylor Rapp as starters.
