Bills safety Damar Hamlin collapses on field, game against Bengals postponed

The Buffalo Bills game against the Cincinnati Bengals has been postponed after Damar Hamlin suffered a terrifying injury and is in critical condition at University of Cincinnati Medical Center.
The safety was injured in the first quarter of the Bills game against the Cincinnati Bengals on Monday Night Football.
Hamlin tackled Cincinnati wide receiver Tee Higgins, got to his feet and then crumpled to the ground. A stretcher and ambulance came onto the field as most of the Bills' roster came off the sideline to kneel or stand around Hamlin. First responders administered CPR to Hamlin on the field and used an automated external defibrillator. Hamlin was given oxygen as he was loaded into an ambulance. He was transported to University of Cincinnati Medical Center, the region's only adult level 1 trauma center. Hamlin's mother was in attendance at the game and rode with him to the hospital.
Several Bills players could be seen crying as Hamlin was tended to by medical personnel. Other players held hands praying or hugged each other.
Hamlin fell to the ground at about 8:55 p.m. ESPN cut from the broadcast from the field and went to a studio at 9:08 p.m.
Buffalo head coach Sean McDermott and Cincinnati head coach Zac Taylor spoke to officials as they determined if play would resume. The game was temporarily suspended at 9:17 p.m. and both teams went to the locker room. Hamlin left the stadium in the ambulance at 9:25 p.m.
At 9:52, nearly an hour after Hamlin collapsed, McDermott and some Bills players emerged from the locker room. The NFL announced at 10 p.m. the game was postponed for the night. It has not been determined if and when play will resume.

Hamlin was selected in the sixth round of the 2021 NFL Draft by the Buffalo Bills out of the University of Pittsburgh. He overcame losing multiple friends to gun violence and his dad to prison to become a feel-good story to make the Bills.
He saw action in 14 games as a rookie, making two tackles. Hamlin became a starting safety in September after Micah Hyde went down with a season-ending injury. Hamlin has 92 tackles and 1.5 sacks in 2022.
