Observations from Auburn's Wednesday practice: Injury updates, freshman WRs catching punts
AUBURN — Auburn football continued fall camp Wednesday, and reporters were given about 40 minutes to watch the Tigers practice.
Here are our biggest observations from the portion of practice open to the media:
Let's start with injury updates: Senior cornerback Keionte Scott was away from the rest of the team, working inside the facility with pads on. It appeared he had his right thigh wrapped. Transfer receiver KeAndre Lambert-Smith (Penn State) was with Scott in the facility, and he had a wrap on his right ankle. Sophomore defensive end Keldric Faulk had to briefly take a break from practice to get his left ankle wrapped, but he jogged with the trainer to the table and didn't have a noticeable limp.
Redshirt freshman cornerback JC Hart, who was wearing a non-contact jersey, made a few nice plays. His best of the day came in a one-on-one situation against freshman receiver Perry Thompson. Thompson ran a fade in the end zone and got both hands on the ball, but Hart was sticky in coverage and punched through the ball to cause an incompletion.
Speaking of Thompson, he was one of five players catching punts — all 6-foot-3, 222 pounds of him. The other four fielding punts included fellow freshman receivers Bryce Cain and Malcolm Simmons and walk-ons Will Upton and Greg McConico Jr. It's important to note Scott, who was Auburn's main punt returner last season, wasn't out there.
Cam Coleman continues to impress, even in reps that don't count. Coleman ran a fade against sophomore cornerback Kayin Lee, and he shook the defender to get open. Coleman made the catch, but Lee recovered nicely and was able to force Coleman out of bounds before he could land.
Other notable reps: Transfer safety Jerrin Thompson was in coverage on tight end Brandon Frazier on an incompletion, as was Lee against Caleb Burton III. Transfer receiver Sam Jackson V (Cal) caught a touchdown after going in motion.
