NFL Twitter reacts to 49ers' rough loss vs. Vikings in Week 2
Despite a 1-0 start that included a throttling of Aaron Rodgers and the New York Jets on Monday Night Football, the San Francisco 49ers posted an underwhelming performance in Week 2 against the Minnesota Vikings.
Brock Purdy threw for 319 yards and a touchdown. Yet, a crucial fumble and an interception defined his performance. Although Deebo Samuel recorded 110 yards receiving and Jordan Mason stayed hot with another 100-yard effort and a touchdown, but it wasn't enough to keep up with the Vikings.
Third down tormented Kyle Shanahan and the 49ers all day, with Purdy and company converting just 2-of-10 attempts on third down.
Sam Darnold threw for 268 yards two touchdowns and an interception, including a 97-yard touchdown pass to Justin Jefferson during the Vikings 23-17 win over the 49ers.
Fred Warner was one of the few bright spots, recording a team-high nine tackles and a sack while also forcing two turnovers to keep the 49ers in the contest.
Following the 49ers' loss to the Vikings in Minnesota, the NFL community on Twitter chimed in with a flurry of reactions. Here's a look at what fans and analysts were saying on social media on Sunday.
49ers’ inability to get off field on 3rd-and-long today gave me 2021 vibes. There were times that season when the defense really struggled in that regard. They figured it out down the stretch but also struggled in the NFC title game. That was a much less talented secondary though

#Vikings pressured #49ers QB Brock Purdy on 13 dropbacks today resulting in 6 sacks.
Both are the most Purdy has taken in his career.— Nick Wagoner (@nwagoner) September 15, 2024

The 49ers never led today vs. the Vikings. It's their 8th straight loss there and 4th consecutive game the Vikings have led wire-to-wire over the 49ers in Minnesota.

Brock Purdy, as a starting quarterback has only lost twice to NFC teams during the regular season.

Last season, the 49ers defense gave up a 42.5% third-down conversion rate.
This season, the 49ers defense has given up a 59% third-down conversion rate.
Maybe Steve Wilks wasn't the problem.— Grant Cohn (@grantcohn) September 15, 2024
The 49ers scored 17 points last year with CMC against the Vikins and 17 points this year without CMC against the Vikings.
The common denominator? Kyle Shanahan getting outcoached.— Grant Cohn (@grantcohn) September 15, 2024
#49ers a combined 3-of-13 on third and fourth down today.
They're 9-of-26 on the year (34.6% which would be tied for 21st in the NFL).
This would be where McCaffrey's absence and Aiyuk's slow start seem to be showing up the most which leads to not finishing drives with TDs.— Nick Wagoner (@nwagoner) September 15, 2024
