Florida State entered the 2024 college football season with lofty expectations as a preseason top-10 team, and with a chip on its shoulder after missing the College Football Playoffs last season.

However, the Seminoles' start to the season hasn't played out that way.

Mike Norvell's squad perhaps reached rock bottom on Saturday, as Florida State (0-3) suffered a 20-12 loss to Norvell's former program, Memphis, at Doak Campbell Stadium. It is the second time the Seminoles have started 0-3 under Norvell per ESPN.

And while Saturday's loss surely puts Florida State's odds of making a bowl game into question, it also came with a hefty financial payout to Memphis as it was a non-conference game.

Florida State owes Memphis $1.3 million for Saturday’s game, according to terms of a contract that was obtained by the USA TODAY Network and previously reported by The Commercial Appeal.

Saturday's game between the Seminoles and Tigers was agreed upon back in 2020, the year Norvell left Memphis for Tallahassee. Per USA TODAY, the Seminoles are the first team ranked in the preseason top 10 poll to start 0-3 in a non-COVID year since Texas A&M did so in 1988.

The Seminoles still have one more "buy game" part of their 2024 schedule, which comes in Week 13 against Charleston Southern on Saturday, Nov. 23.
