Missouri football's Eli Drinkwitz provides availability update on Luther Burden, other starters

Missouri football coach Eli Drinkwitz, during a press conference Tuesday afternoon, said that star wide receivers Luther Burden III and Theo Wease Jr. are “probable” for the No. 6/8-ranked Tigers’ game against No. 24/NR Boston College on Saturday in Columbia.

Starting tight end Brett Norfleet and right guard Cam’Ron Johnson, who missed MU’s game against Buffalo last Saturday, will be “questionable,” per the head coach. Drinkwitz said that he hopes that backup cornerback Ja’Mariyon Wayne is available after dealing with a lingering hamstring issue.

The SEC recently mandated availability reports for the league’s teams, but only ahead on in-conference matchups. The league does not publish availability reports for SEC teams ahead of nonconference games, nor is Missouri required to make one public.

When those come into effect for the Tigers — which will be ahead of MU’s Week 4 game against Vanderbilt — they will be required to release reports Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday in the day’s leading up to the game.

The possible availability designations on the report, from most likely to play to least likely, are probable; questionable; doubtful; and out. That means, per the head coach's update, Burden and Wease are likely to feature against Boston College, while Norfleet and Johnson are closer to 50-50.

Burden left in the first half of the Tigers’ shutout of Buffalo with an illness, a team spokesperson confirmed to the Tribune during the game. Drinkwitz said after the game that the star wide receiver had been dealing with an illness leading up to the matchup, and that the team didn’t feel it was a worthwhile risk to put back him on the field.

Wease, who had a career-high 13 catches and 149 receiving yards against the Bulls, appeared to be holding his shoulder on the MU sideline after taking a heavy hit on a long catch and run on one of those receptions. That does not appear to be a lingering issue.

“Not concerned about either one of those (Burden or Wease) right now,” Drinkwitz said.

Norfleet missed Saturday’s contest with a shoulder injury, and Tyler Stephens and Jordon Harris took the bulk of the reps in his absence. MU’s coach said he would practice Tuesday, and that the team would see “where he’s at.”

Drinkwitz said Johnson, who was a game-time scratch against Buffalo and was replaced by Mitchell Walters, will be wearing a no-contact jersey at the Tigers’ practice later Tuesday.
