Missouri football bowl projections: Here’s where Mizzou could play in postseason

It’s been unofficially clear for a while, but now there’s official word.

The College Football Playoff committee released its first set of rankings of the year on Tuesday evening, placing Missouri football as the No. 24 team in the country.

While the Tigers are ranked, which means they are at least being considered by the committee, the path ahead of them is what makes the outlook bleak. Mizzou is the eighth-ranked team in the SEC in the committee’s estimation, which would put it well outside of the final 12-team playoff field.

So, the CFP has spoken. But where else is Mizzou likely to land in the postseason?

Here’s where the national media have the Tigers going bowling:

Action Network projects Missouri football vs Louisville in Gator Bowl

Brett McMurphy of Action Network has Missouri facing off against Louisville in the Gator Bowl.

Louisville became bowl eligible with a win on the road at Clemson on Saturday, taking the Cardinals to 6-3 on the year with losses to Miami, Notre Dame and SMU.

The Gator Bowl is one of the final non-CFP bowls of the college football season, taking place on Jan. 2 in Jacksonville, Florida.

CBS Sports: Citrus Bowl vs Indiana

Jerry Palm of CBS Sports, for the second straight week, is staying high on Mizzou and low on a surging Indiana, keeping the teams matched up for a bout in the Citrus Bowl.

The Citrus Bowl makes the first selection after the CFP field is announced and takes the teams from the SEC and Big Ten that have the best records and are not among the 12-team field. The game is held Dec. 31 in Orlando.

Indiana is currently 9-0 and was ranked No. 8 by the CFP committee on Tuesday, which would be a good enough mark to get into the playoffs. Mizzou likely has to win out for a Citrus Bowl berth.

ESPN: Las Vegas Bowl vs Cal; Music City Bowl vs Michigan

Cal Twitter? Las Vegas?

ESPN’s Kyle Bonagura is really sticking Mizzou in the thick of all things chaotic, sending Missouri to face California in the Las Vegas Bowl. And who says no?

His colleague at ESPN, Mark Schlabach, has Mizzou matching up with Michigan in the Music City Bowl, as he has for multiple weeks this season.

The Las Vegas Bowl takes place Dec. 27 at Allegiant Stadium in Sin City. California is 4-4 this season and has not won a game in its first year of ACC play.

The Music City Bowl is scheduled for Dec. 30 in Nashville, Tennessee. Michigan is 5-4 and has games against Indiana and Ohio State, both firmly in the CFP conversation, left on its schedule.

USA Today: Las Vegas Bowl vs Utah

Erick Smith of USA Today has Missouri squaring off against Utah in the Las Vegas Bowl.

The Utes, currently 4-4, still have an uphill battle toward bowl eligibility, facing three ranked teams in their final four games. They’ll need at least two wins to be bowl-eligible.

The Las Vegas Bowl matches up teams from the SEC and any former Pac-12 members.
