Mets 5, Brewers 0: Who will the Brewers play in the first round of the playoffs? Why we still don't know
One-hundred sixty two up. One-hundred sixty-two down.
And yet, the Milwaukee Brewers still don't know who they will be playing in their 163rd game.
The Brewers capped off the regular season with a 5-0 loss to the New York Mets on Sunday afternoon at American Family Field, a result that was largely inconsequential to Milwaukee but imperative to the visitors.
The Mets, after a week of tail-spinning as the regular season drew to a close, were in dire need of a win Sunday. There was a scenario involving a win over the Brewers and loss by the Arizona Diamondbacks that would have clinched a playoff spot for the Mets, but more than anything they simply needed to pick up one game in the series with Milwaukee.
BOX SCORE: Mets 5, Brewers 0
Turned out that both teams won, creating a scenario of chaos — one in which the Brewers won't know their wild card opponent until Monday night.
Let's explain where things lie and how it affects the Brewers.
Who do the Brewers play in the first round?
As a result of Hurricane Helene postponing the final two games of the Mets' series with the Atlanta Braves at Truist Park last week, the two teams will play a doubleheader in Atlanta on Monday, leaving open the possibility that New York has to fly back to Milwaukee just over 24 hours after leaving The Good Land.
With the Braves losing Sunday and both the Mets and Diamondbacks winning, that leaves three possible scenarios that are relevant to the Brewers.
If the Braves sweep the doubleheader, they make the playoffs as the second wild card and will face San Diego while the Diamondbacks get the final wild card and play Milwaukee.
If the Mets sweep the Braves, they will be the second wild card, and Arizona will play the Brewers.
If the Mets and Braves split the doubleheader, it will be the Mets coming back to Milwaukee while the Braves play the Padres.
A split would seem to be the most likely scenario, and not only because the teams are fairly evenly-matched. Whichever team wins the front end of the doubleheader Monday has no incentive to win the second game other than eliminating a division rival, which likely isn't enough to outweigh the need to line up their pitching and rest their key position players.
Desperate Mets jump ahead early against Colin Rea
The Mets looked like a desperate side from the jump, with Francisco Lindor walking and immediately stealing second en route to scoring on Brandon Nimmo's RBI single off Colin Rea in the first inning.
They pushed that advantage to 3-0 on run-scoring singles from Francisco Alvarez and Lindor in the fourth.
It was clear from the jump that Colin Rea's sole purpose on the mound for the Brewers was to eat innings Sunday. As the Mets loaded the bases with one out on their way to scoring a run in the fifth, the bullpen remained inactive.
Rea remained in the game for the sixth, when Lindor led off the inning with a solo homer. He ultimately allowed 10 hits and five runs over 5 2/3 with a walk, hit batter and five strikeouts.
Willy Adames leaves to an ovation
Playing in what is his likely final regular season game with the Brewers, Willy Adames was taken out of the game with one out in the top of the seventh inning by manager Pat Murphy so the shortstop could receive an ovation from the American Family Field crowd.
Adames is a free agent at season's end and caps his 2024 season playing 161 of 162 games and hitting 32 homers, driving in 112 runs, stealing 21 bases and a .793 OPS.
