Miami Dolphins' Jalen Ramsey hamstring news could put Ethan Bonner into starting lineup

MIAMI GARDENS — The Miami Dolphins are not guaranteeing Jalen Ramsey's hamstring injury won't keep him sidelined in Sunday's season-opener against Jacksonville.

"If Jalen doesn't play, opportunity for Ethan Bonner," Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver said Thursday. "Opportunity for a young player like Storm Duck... You wouldn't be here and we wouldn't even think about putting you on defense if we didn't think you can play when you step out there."

Ramsey has barely practiced over the last three weeks and was not seen by media on the field Wednesday or Thursday.

Ramsey, 29, has 117 starts in the NFL and is a seven-time Pro Bowler.

Bonner, 24, is an undrafted player with two games played, no starts.

Bonner said Thursday he is preparing as if he’ll start.

“Any opportunity I have, I’m going to try to take advantage of,” Bonner said. “I’m definitely excited. It would a good experience. To get a lot of reps would be awesome and invaluable.”

Duck, 23, is an undrafted rookie from Louisville.

Jalen Ramsey injury status for Dolphins' opener in question

Recently, Dolphins general manager Chris Grier was asked how confident he is in Bonner and Duck's readiness to play, if needed.

"Very confident," Grier said. "Ethan played a little bit for us last year and the thing we love about him is he is a smart player, he’s very competitive. We’ve had a number of teams try to trade for him in the offseason, even last year, and so very excited for his opportunity and he’s taken advantage of whatever time he’s had. Storm has come in and just worked right from the beginning, so he’s been a pleasant surprise."

Weaver said he is hoping Ramsey can play.

"I'm hopeful," Weaver said." Uh, you know, prayers every night. But the one thing is it's not for a lack of work ethic. He's doing everything he can in the training room to try to put himself out there. We've just got to be smart and cognizant that we do have two games in whatever that is. So, we'll see."

Miami Dolphins rookie Storm Duck Drawing attention — and not for his name

That it's been raised Miami has two games in the first five days of the season is not particularly encouraging.

But, as Weaver, said, we'll see.

How would the absence of Ramsey impact Weaver's play-calling?

"I think you're cognizant of it, just because you know the potential like eraser effect he can have, but we're not making wholesale changes if he doesn't play, let's put it that way," Weaver said. "You obviously can't replace a Jalen Ramsey with any one particular player. I think it just requires from the full defense as a whole to pick up that slack and I think we're more than capable of doing that."
