Memphis Grizzlies unable to overcome Golden State's 22 unanswered points in road loss

Things changed fast for the Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday night against the Golden State Warriors.

The score was tied late in the second quarter before the Warriors ended the half on a 10-0 run. Things didn't get much better in the second half.

A 22-0 Warriors run put the game out of reach as Memphis fell 137-116 at Chase Center.

The Warriors (36-32) got big nights from several players, including double-doubles by Draymond Green and Chris Paul. Golden State opened the game up by knocking down 3-pointers at a high rate. The Grizzlies (23-47) were keeping up in terms of made 3-pointers for most of the night, but Golden State was more efficient outside and inside the arc.

Santi Aldama, Jaren Jackson Jr. and GG Jackson each topped 20 points. It's the second consecutive game at least three Grizzlies players have scored 20 or more points.

Jackson continued to shine and finished with a career-high 35 points. The 19-year-old rookie looked confident while scoring 21 points in the second half.

Here are some takeaways from the game.

Nine active players

Memphis was without 11 players against Golden State. Ten of those were listed on the injury report, plus guard Jordan Goodwin was inactive due to being on a games restriction due to his two-way contract. The Grizzlies played an eight-man rotation for the second consecutive game.

New 10-day signing Maozinha Pereria was available but wasn't in the rotation. He entered the game late in the fourth quarter. Even though Memphis played a competitive game a couple days earlier against the Sacramento Kings, relying on eight players is not a recipe for success. The lack of depth is magnified when playing a team that has as much movement as Golden State.

Young forwards leading the way

Before the score got out of hand, the Grizzlies had two of their young forwards keeping them in the game. Aldama had the best half of his NBA career by scoring 21 points and making six 3-pointers in the first half. GG Jackson was right behind him with 14 points and efficient shooting. Both players did most of their work from beyond the 3-point line, which has been the case for them throughout their young careers.

Sustaining that production over four quarters is tough, but it will get easier when the likes of Ja Morant and Marcus Smart are back on the floor. Having players like Jackson and Aldama being able to space the floor and confidently shoot 3-pointers bodes well for the Grizzlies' future.

Rivalry remains

The second quarter was a quick flashback to why the Grizzlies and Warriors were considered as a potential NBA rivalry. Aldama was pushed by Warriors forward Draymond Green without a whistle being blown. Seconds later, Green and Grizzlies guard Desmond Bane were tangled up and issued technical fouls.

There aren't many Grizzlies players playing right now who have been around for the Grizzlies-Warriors postseason matchups, but it didn't feel like a coincidence that two of the players who were around got tangled up with Green. Jackson previously mentioned how earlier this season, the injured Morant told him that the team he wanted to beat is Golden State. That matchup still has a special flavor to it that will be elevated again next season.

What's next

The Grizzlies will continue their road trip with a matchup against the San Antonio Spurs. Rookie of the Year favorite Victor Wembanyama has taken his game to another level since Memphis last played San Antonio and is averaging 20.7 points, 10.4 rebounds and 3.5 blocked shots per game. The Grizzlies currently have a 12-game winning streak against the Spurs that dates back to January 2021.
