Memphis Grizzlies have the energy, defeat Miami Heat in second straight road win

The Miami Heat are known for their hustle and tenacity, but it was the Memphis Grizzlies who brought the fire Wednesday night in their 105-96 win at Kaseya Center.

The Grizzlies dived for loose balls and created steals and deflections while playing with noticeably more energy than the Heat showed. That effort led to Memphis entering the fourth quarter with a 14-point lead.

With only nine players active against a Heat team comprising four players averaging more than 20 points per game, the Grizzlies just needed to hold on. The Heat boosted their effort in the fourth quarter and cut the Grizzlies' lead to two points entering the final two minutes.

Memphis was prepared to handle the run. Vince Williams Jr. knocked down a corner 3-pointer as the shot clock wound down to give the Grizzlies a five-point lead in the final minute.

Williams led the Grizzlies (17-27) with 25 points. Recently acquired two-way guard Scotty Pippen Jr. came off the bench and had a career-high 15 points, plus six assists, and was a major contributor late in the game.

Memphis held the Heat (24-20) to 40.2% shooting.

Here are some takeaways from the game.

Another new Memphis Grizzlies lineup

Luke Kennard and Santi Aldama joined the list of inactive Memphis players on Wednesday. Their absences led to the Grizzlies' ninth starting lineup in the past 10 games. Jacob Gilyard started in place of Kennard and knocked down two 3-pointers and had a game-high seven assists. All five starters had at least one steal and more than two assists.

As good as the starters were, the Grizzlies' bench was equally up to the task, outscoring the Heat's unit 38-31.

Young dynamic duo

Two players who started the season on two-way contracts were the biggest X-factors. Williams made his first four 3-pointers while playing good defense, and GG Jackson starred off the bench, knocking down open shots.

Williams and Jackson led the Grizzlies' scoring in the first half, and both were major reasons why Memphis secured the victory. Jackson finished with 17 points, including four 3-pointers, and had four rebounds and two assists.

Jaren Jackson Jr. struggles

Jaren Jackson Jr. scored two quick baskets near the end of the first quarter after Miami center Bam Adebayo went to the bench. Heat coach Erik Spoelstra quickly subbed Adebayo back in, and Jackson's scoring was neutralized as he finished the half 2-for-10.

Jackson came out more aggressive in the second half and forced two quick fouls on Adebayo. But the Miami big man still held Jackson in check. Jackson shot 5-for-21 and finished with 15 points.

What's next

The Grizzlies return home after going 2-2 on their four-game road trip. They will play the Orlando Magic at 7 p.m. Friday at FedExForum. This will be the teams' first meeting of the season.
