Meet the 2024 Journal Star wrestler of the year and complete Peoria all-area team

Wrestlers from the Peoria area had yet another banner year during the 2023-2024 season.

Local wrestlers won medal after medal at the 2024 Illinois High School Association state finals. Individual boys wrestlers brought home four state championships and four silver medals, while the girls had a pair of state runners-up. The following weekend, Washington went on to win its second consecutive dual-team state championship.

His Class 2A 138-pound title bout victory came in beating Mt. Vernon junior Dillon White, 10-3. The sophomore (45-4) won the Metamora Regional along with a title at the Sycamore Sectional. Medlin was also 3-0 during Washington's run to winning back-to-back Class 2A dual-team state championships. He also becomes the sixth Washington WOY since 2014.

Jackson Carroll, Illini Bluffs

The junior (51-2) needed an escape and a takedown in the final 39 seconds of the match to beat Tolono Unity junior Kaden Inman, 8-7. Carroll, who was one of three IB state qualifiers, was a regional champion at Knoxville, while also taking home an Olympia Sectional title.

In the final, he recorded a 4-2 decision over Vernon Hills sophomore Illia Dvoriannikov. This came after the senior finished as the 2A 160-pound state runner-up last season. His road to the title included a Metamora Regional title, then a runner-up finish at the Sycamore Sectional.
