Malcolm Rodriguez injury update: Detroit Lions LB likely avoids worst case scenario
The Detroit Lions appear to have avoided another potentially season-ending injury to their front seven.
Lions coach Dan Campbell said Malcolm Rodriguez likely avoided the worst when he injured his ankle covering a kick in the first quarter of the Lions' 52-14 win over the Tennessee Titans on Sunday at Ford Field.
Rodriguez limped to the sideline for evaluation and was taken to the locker room by cart a few minutes later. The Lions quickly ruled him out for the game.
"We’ll know more tomorrow," Campbell said. "I mean, obviously he didn’t finish the game so that’s not good. But I don’t think it’ll be something like this is going to take the rest of the season, it’s nothing like that."
The Lions already have lost three key players in their front seven to potentially season-ending injuries.
THIS TEAM IS DEEP: Detroit Lions had 'off day,' still dropped 52 points. Yes, this team is something special
Defensive end Marcus Davenport is out for the rest of the year with a torn triceps he suffered in the Lions' Week 3 win over the Arizona Cardinals, and strong-side linebacker Derrick Barnes suffered a knee injury in the same game that could keep him out the rest of the year.
Defensive end Aidan Hutchinson broke the tibia and fibula in his left leg a few weeks later in a win over the Dallas Cowboys and is out four to six months. Hutchinson watched Sunday's game from his family's suite at Ford Field and received a big ovation when cameras showed him the video board.
Rodriguez has filled a part-time starting role at linebacker since Barnes' absence, playing primarily as the Lions' weakside linebacker with Alex Anzalone and Trevor Nowaske taking Barnes' reps on the strong side.
Brock Wright replaced Rodriguez on the Lions' kick-return unit Sunday and had a key block on Khalil Dorsey's 72-yard return.
The Lions (6-1) visit the Green Bay Packers (6-2) next week with first place in the NFC North on the line.
