LSU football vs Ole Miss: Score prediction, scouting report on top-10, SEC matchup

BATON ROUGE — A top-10 showdown. Saturday night inside Tiger Stadium. National television audience.

LSU football and Ole Miss have both certainly been on this stage and in the spotlight a number of times, but as Brian Kelly and his players have said this week, it doesn't get old.

"This is the SEC at its best," Kelly said Wednesday.

The No. 10 Tigers (4-1, 1-0 SEC) take on Lane Kiffin and the No. 8 Rebels (5-1, 1-1) Saturday (6:30 p.m., ABC) and after a week when plenty of chaos shook out across the conference, both of these teams will staunchly remain in the mix for the top two spots in the league with a win Saturday night.

Last season, the Rebs eked out a 55-49 win in Oxford over the Tigers in a game that seemingly had little to zero defense. Both Kiffin and Kelly went out this offseason and revamped their defensive staffs to hopefully not have any repeats of what transpired on that fateful Saturday.

Looking specifically at this season's matchup, it would not behoove LSU to get into a 100-plus combined-point shootout with Kiffin, Jaxson Dart and the Ole Miss offense. While quarterback Garrett Nussmeier, receivers Kyren Lacy and Aaron Anderson, tight end Mason Taylor and the offensive line have paved the way for plenty of points through the first five games, to play keep up, LSU would likely have to go one dimensional. That's not a good thing against Ole Miss' defensive line this season, which has been one of the top units in causing pressure.

Garrett Nussmeier will have to outduel Jaxson Dart for LSU to win

The biggest question mark for the Tigers going into this game is will freshman running back Caden Durham be healthy and available? He's been the biggest difference maker for LSU at the position with his ability to run and catch the ball out of the backfield.

Even if Durham can play, LSU will need a monstrous effort from quarterback Garrett Nussmeier to overcome Ole Miss.

LSU's defense have been inconsistent in pass coverage through the first five games and when the secondary has faced a receiver of the caliber of Tre Harris, opponents have been fruitful against them.

The good thing for LSU is that Nussmeier has been surgical this season and is playing like a top three quarterback in the SEC, a league that boasts a number of nationally recognized signal callers.

Injuries, players potentially not playing could factor huge in LSU-Ole Miss

Both teams are pretty nicked up coming into this matchup.

For Ole Miss, Harris, defensive end Princely Umanmielen, running back Henry Parrish Jr., defensive tackle J.J. Pegues are notable players who were either on last week's injury report or did not play in the team's 24-3 win at South Carolina last week.

Along with the aforementioned Durham, LSU has been nursing injuries to cornerback Zy Alexander and senior receiver C.J. Daniels — all three guys difference makers at their respective positions.

If either team is able to get back some guys or have some guys work to be fully healthy, it will be in a better position Saturday night.
