What LSU coach Brian Kelly said about Ole Miss players 'faking injuries' to slow game down

BATON ROUGE — There has been some consternation this season about Ole Miss possibly "faking injuries" while on defense in attempt to slow down the tempo of the game in pivotal moments.

Late in the Rebels' loss a couple of weeks ago to Kentucky at home, there appeared to be a few times when Lane Kiffin's players were falling to the ground several moments past the end of the previous, sparking yet another conversation about gamesmanship.

The NCAA as well as the Southeastern Conference have verbiage on the books pertaining to players faking injuries. According to those statutes, how those instances are handled is coaches and/or schools can relay video of the moments in question to the NCAA and then it passes the footage onto the specific conference offices for it decipher.

So there's no definitive rule. And Ole Miss has not been reportedly penalized for anything.

No. 10 LSU football is gearing up to face the No. 8 Rebels for a monster SEC showdown inside Tiger Stadium on Saturday night (6:30 p.m., ABC). Tigers coach Brian Kelly told reporters during his press conference Monday he can't get caught up in players going down with injuries.

"The SEC has a policy regarding it. So there is a policy in place that was implemented by the commissioner relative to sportsmanship," Kelly said. "If there was any faking of injuries in a deliberate fashion that the SEC would take action on that. I can leave that up to the SEC and let them evaluate that.

"Other than that, the officials shouldn't be involved in it. That's not their purview. They've got to officiate a game. They can't decide who's injured, not injured."

Kelly said the only thing he and his coaching staff should be worried about is their players and keeping them locked in on the task at hand.

"As a coach, you just coach your guys. You try to play through any of those instances," he said. "We let our policy from the SEC kind of handle any of those instances."
