Can LSU football still make the SEC championship game? Where Tigers stand in SEC

BATON ROUGE — The margins are gone.

After LSU football's collapse at Texas A&M on Saturday night, Tigers coach Brian Kelly said he believed his team was still very much in the hunt for their team goals despite the first SEC loss on the season. There's now no room for error for No. 16 LSU (6-2, 3-1 SEC).

A&M (7-1, 5-0) is the lone unbeaten left in the SEC, a conference that has picked itself apart the last few weeks. Preseason favorites Texas and Georgia have both lost an SEC game. LSU is one of three teams that only has one loss in league play along with Texas, Georgia as well as Tennessee.

Chances the Tigers make the SEC championship game still very much alive, despite the loss to Texas A&M as well as the College Football Playoff.

Here is where LSU stand in the SEC race with games against Alabama at home, Florida on the road, Vanderbilt and Oklahoma at home to close out the regular season.

Who makes the 2024 SEC championship game?

The SEC threw out divisions as Oklahoma and Texas joined and expanded the league to 16 member schools. Instead of West and West divisional winners playing the conference title, the SEC's top two squads with the best overall conference record will compete for the conference championship Dec. 7 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.

If there is a tie, the SEC will determine participants in the conference championship game based on there tiebreakers:

  • Head-to-head competition among the tied teams

  • Record vs. all common conference opponents among the tied teams

  • Record against highest (best) placed common conference opponent in the conference standings, and proceeding through the conference standings among the tied teams

  • Cumulative conference winning percentage of all conference opponents among the tied teams

  • Capped relative total scoring margin versus all conference opponents among the tied teams

  • Random draw of the tied teams

If two teams are tied for first place, both will qualify for the championship. The tiebreaker will be used to determine the home team.
