What LSU football coach Brian Kelly said about WR Jelani Watkins' injury

BATON ROUGE — Through its first 10 preseason practices, LSU football has been able to stay relatively and collectively healthy amid the tough sessions and the near-unbearable August heat.

While no starters have any lingering injuries this fall camp, wide receiver Jelani Watkins did suffer a foot injury early in Tuesday's practice in a pylon drill when a defender landed on his foot and sat out the remainder of it. During the media viewing period Wednesday morning, Watkins was seen on crutches, wearing a walking boot on the sideline while LSU worked through the two-hour practice No. 11.

Following practice, Tigers head coach Brian Kelly told reporters the freshman suffered a "foot and ankle sprain" and that Kelly does not expect Watkins to miss an extended period of time.

"We did an MRI so there's no Lisfranc," Kelly said Wednesday. "So this will be one where it's a soft tissue injury. (LSU football senior associate athletic trainer Owen Stanley) and his team will get him back pretty quickly."

LSU dodged another longterm injury.

Through the first couple of weeks of practice, Watkins had been working with the third- and fourth-string receiver group but where he looked like he could see some early playing time is in the return game, both kickoff and punt.

Kelly mentioned Watkins in July during LSU's day at the SEC Media Kickoff as one of the young, unknown guys on this season's team that could possibly make a name for themselves and contribute.

LSU is set at receiver with Kyren Lacy back from last season's team to lead this group that doesn't have the firepower like last season's unit with Malik Nabers and Brian Thomas. Chris Hilton has stood out in practice while Liberty transfer C.J. Daniels has really impressed Kelly and the coaching staff.

Behind them is Aaron Anderson, who garnered some playing time in 2023. Freshmen Kyle Parker and Shelton Sampson have also been running behind Lacy, Hilton and Daniels.
