LSU baseball transfer portal class ranked No. 2 by D1 Baseball
BATON ROUGE – Few college baseball programs had a transfer portal haul this offseason like LSU baseball, according to D1 Baseball.
The national outlet on Wednesday released its 2024 transfer portal class rankings and had coach Jay Johnson and his staff's seven transfers into the reigning College World Series champion's program the No. 2 class behind only Wake Forest.
LSU, a consensus preseason top 3 team for this season, brought in five pitchers to help bolster a pitching staff that saw several departures from last season's national title conquest, along with Michael Braswell from South Carolina and Mac Bingham from Arizona, to help fill needs in the field.
Who did LSU baseball recruit from the transfer portal?
Pitchers lead the way for the Tigers' transfer class.
LSU landed two Alabama transfers in right-handers Luke Holman and Kade Woods, who both played the last two seasons in Tuscaloosa. Holman served as Alabama's Friday night ace last season, posting a 7-4 record and a 3.67 ERA while limiting hitters to a .186 average.
Woods, the West Monroe native, pitched 29 1/3 innings in 2023 in 17 appearances and had 38 strikeouts.
Justin Loer was an All-Big East performer for Zavier last season when he helped land the Musketeers an NCAA Tournament berth. The lefty recorded seven saves, started one game and a 6-2 record with a 1.89 ERA.
Left-hander Gage Jump, a transfer from UCLA, didn't pitch in 2023 due to injury but has starting experience from his freshman season. JUCO transfer Fidel Ulloa, a righty, posted five wins in 10 starts in 2023 at San Joaquin Delta College in Stockton, California and finished with a 4.09 ERA with 75 strikeouts.
Bingham might be LSU's prize out of the portal. The outfielder from Arizona was a 40th round selection by the Chicago Cubs during the MLB Draft back in July after earning All-Pac 12 honors in 2023 when he hit .360 with 51 RBIs, 68 runs and 10 home runs.
Braswell started 37 games for Mark Kingston at South Carolina the last two seasons and an Freshman All-SEC pick in 2022. He had 23 RBIs last season.

Johnson and his staff brought in three of the top seven transfers before last season, headlined by Tommy White from North Carolina State and Paul Skenes from the Air Force Academy.
Skenes went on to become college baseball's top pitcher and was the overall No. 1 pick by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the Draft last summer. White belted 24 homers in 2023 and ended up hitting .374 for the season.
Other transfer Thather Hurd became a pivotal piece to LSU's championship puzzle last year, winning the College World Series deciding game three against Florida. Hurd gave up two run in six frames with seven Ks.
