LSU baseball, Jay Johnson agree to contract extension. Here's what he is expected to make
BATON ROUGE — LSU baseball coach Jay Johnson is on the verge of becoming the highest-paid public school baseball coach in the SEC.
Johnson has agreed to a contract extension that would pay him $12.55 million over the next seven seasons before bonuses, according to documents obtained by The Advertiser through a public records request Thursday.
The amended deal is still pending approval from the LSU Board of Supervisors, which is set to vote on the extension Friday.
The agreement adds an additional four years to Johnson's contract, as his contract is expected to balloon to $2 million by the final year of his deal in 2030. He was set to earn $1.3 million this season before the new deal but now is on track to make $1.65 million.
Ole Miss coach Mike Bianco, who was the top-paid public school coach in the conference last season, earned $1.625 million last season and is projected to earn the same amount before bonuses this upcoming season, according to documents obtained by The Advertiser.
The only SEC coach to make $2 million or more recently is Vanderbilt coach Tim Corbin, who earned $2.447 million in 2021, according to tax records obtained by The Tennessean.
Corbin has since agreed to a contract extension in December of 2021, but the terms of the new deal are unknown since Vanderbilt is a private school and is not required to obey public records laws.
Johnson's new contract extension includes a $200,000 bonus if LSU wins the national championship, double the amount he made after LSU won the national title this past season.
He would also earn an additional $75,000 if LSU reaches the College World Series and the same amount if LSU makes the World Series final. Johnson earned $50,000 after LSU reached each of those rounds of the tournament this past year.
Additionally, if LSU hosts a Super Regional this season, Johnson will earn a $50,000 bonus which is $10,000 more than he made this year when LSU hosted the Baton Rouge Super Regional against Kentucky.
