What to know about Evansville, Tennessee baseball's super regional opponent
Tennessee baseball knows its opponent standing in the way of a third College World Series trip under coach Tony Vitello.
The No. 1 national seed Vols (53-11) will host Evansville (38-24) starting Friday (3 p.m. ET, ESPN2) at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.
Evansville is the ninth No. 4 seed to advance to a super regional after emerging Monday from the Greenville Regional, which was hosted by No. 16 national seed East Carolina and included preseason No. 1 Wake Forest.
Evansville is in its first super regional
Evansville reached the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2006 this season by winning the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament. The Purples Aces run-ruled three straight games before beating top seed Indiana State 8-6 in the title game to clinch a berth
Evansville beat No. 1 seed East Carolina 4-1 in its opening game of the Greenville Regional. It beat VCU 17-11 to say in the winner's bracket before falling into a Monday final against ECU with a 19-6 loss on Sunday. It topped the Pirates 6-5 to win the regional.
The Purple Aces have an ace
Evansville is in a super regional in large part because of what Kenton Deverman did against ECU in the opener. The freshman left-handed pitcher allowed one run on three hits in eight innings, a tremendous effort that set the Purples Aces on the path to a regional win.
Deverman was named the Missouri Valley Conference freshman of the year. He was 9-1 with a 3.81 ERA. He isn't a high-strikeout pitcher with 81 in 106⅓ innings. He also doesn't walk batters with only 20. He throws a lot of strikes and gives up hits with 106 hits allowed.
Evansville relieves heavily on fifth-year pitcher Shane Harris, who has made 25 appearances, and senior starter Donovan Schultz. Schultz is 6-2 with a 5.84 ERA in 16 starts.
Evansville has a ton of experience in the lineup
Evansville's lineup is laden with veterans. The typical nine starters for the Purple Aces include four graduate students, two seniors and three juniors.
Outfielder Kip Fougerousse tied the Evansville program record for homers with his 21st Monday. The senior who transferred from Indiana hit 20, while batting .350 with 64 RBIs before Monday. Outfielder Mark Shallenberger hit .388 with 16 homers and 60 RBIs entering Monday. He slugged a three-run homer in the sixth inning of the regional-clinching game Monday.
