LAWRENCE — Gunnar Broin didn’t stop at just adding his name to the record books earlier this month, when he qualified for this year’s U.S. Open at Pinehurst Resort.
Broin, a senior for KU men’s golf this past season, built on how it’s believed to not be often an active Kansas golfer has been able to participate in a PGA Tour major championship. He didn’t just compete at the U.S. Open as an amateur, as he went on to make the cut and play his way through the event that ran Thursday through Sunday. He finished tied for 70th, with an overall score of +16.
Broin enjoyed a run through the weekend that only two other amateurs did. He did so at an event that included a high-profile fight to the finish. Bryson DeChambeau won the event with an overall score of -6, with Rory McIlroy not far behind with a -5.
Former KU golfer Gary Woodland also competed in the event this year. Woodland is a former champion of the event, when it was held in 2019 at Pebble Beach. However, Woodland did not make the cut this time around.
