Kansas alum Bryce Hoppel barely misses medal at Paris Olympics
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Kansas Jayhawk product Bryce Hoppel made history at the Paris Olympics. But he did not leave with a medal.
Hoppel ran the fastest time an American has ever run in the Olympics Men’s 800m with a 1:41.67 in the final. He finished fourth, only .17 seconds shy of bronze medalist Algerian Djamel Sedjati.
Hoppel could have been the first American to win the Olympic 800m since 1972.

He finished second in his first heat with a 1:45.24 and second in the semifinal with a 1:43.41.
He came into the Olympics in prime form with a gold medal at the 2024 World Indoor Championships in Glasgow, Scotland. He is also the best American runner in the event as the three-time defending U.S. Indoor and Outdoor champion.
Hoppel won the 2019 Indoor and Outdoor 800m national championships along with being a five-time All-American and four-time Big 12 champion with the Jayhawks.
