Sporting KC bounced from Leagues Cup with Columbus loss
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Sporting Kansas City lost to MLS defending champions Columbus Crew 4-0 in regular season play on June 22 in Columbus.
When Sporting saw the champs again at their place in the Leagues Cup knockout rounds, more of the same ensued. Columbus beat Sporting 4-0 this time around on Friday night ousting Kansas City from the 2024 Leagues Cup in the round of 32.
Columbus is also currently third in the MLS Eastern Conference.
SKC held strong throughout the first half limiting Columbus to six shots but Diego Rossi’s brace began with a goal just before the half in the 44th minute. Head coach Peter Vermes went with a 4-2-3-1 formation that has helped Sporting score more goals than their regular 4-3-3.

Rossi streaked down toward the center of the box and received a marvelous feed from star attacker Cucho Hernandez.
Rossi picked up his second goal off of a volley from outside the box in the 57th minute for a 2-0 lead. The dam broke loose in the 77th minute when DeJuan Jones scored just one minute after he subbed on in his club debut after being traded for from New England Revolution.
The final goal came two minutes later from Dylan Chambost, also in his club debut, to put more nails in the coffin for the double blue.
Midfielder Remi Walter surpassed 10,000 career minutes during the match.
At 12th in the Western Conference and nine minutes outside of a playoff spot in MLS, Leagues Cup, and U.S. Open Cup were the highlights for Sporting play along with attempting to claw their way back into playoff position.
Leagues Cup play is finished for Sporting KC. Sporting faces USL Championship squad Indy Eleven in the Open Cup semifinals on Tuesday, Aug. 27.

SKC gets a lengthy break before returning to MLS play hosting seventh-place Eastern Conference side Orlando City on Saturday, Aug. 24 at 7:30 p.m. right before their Open Cup clash.
