What Isaiah Bond's big game vs. UTSA means for Texas football in SEC play

Texas cornerback Jahdae Barron isn't about to list the ingredients to Isaiah Bond's secret sauce, lest they find the eyes of an opposing defensive back.

You're just going to have to trust him: Bond has the tools to terrorize even the best cover corners.

"That's a heck of a player," Barron said after the Longhorns pulverized UTSA 56-7 Saturday night at Royal-Memorial Stadium.

The Roadrunners (1-2) certainly learned as much. Contrary to what the name implies, UTSA's defensive backs were the ones Bond left in a cloud of dust, cartoon style. The Alabama transfer hauled in all five of his targets, accumulating 103 yards and two touchdowns, including a 51-yarder early in the third quarter from backup quarterback Arch Manning.

The stat line could have been more substantial if the Longhorns (3-0) had needed it to be. Averaging a 40-point margin of victory through three games, Texas has earned the luxury of getting Bond off his feet late in games, with younger players benefiting from valuable reps in his place.

Still, Bond set a career-high in receiving yards against the Roadrunners, surpassing his previous mark of 96 yards against Texas A&M last season.

"I thought Isaiah kind of set the tone for us early in the game," Texas coach Steve Sarkisian said.

The question now becomes whether Bond can produce similarly explosive games against opponents with better defensive backs. The Longhorns, who moved up to No. 1 in The Associated Press Top 25 poll and to No. 2 in the US LBM Coaches Poll, will host Louisiana-Monroe this week before their SEC schedule begins next week.

Barron has spent months preparing for those moments.

"Me and Bond, we try to get five reps in, 10 reps in every day after practice and things like that," Barron said. "That's just the kind of mindset we both have to get each other better."

EWERS INJURY: What Texas football coach Steve Sarkisian said of QB's outlook

There are few better practice partners in the country than Barron, a preseason All-SEC defensive back. If anyone is daring enough to play man coverage against Bond, those extra reps will have him ready.

"Just going against one of the best cornerbacks in the league, we get our one-on-one reps every single day just to help me and his technique with my one-on-one reps, the few I get in a game," Bond said.

At Alabama, Bond typically played best in the kind of games where Texas will need him to excel. He reached the 75 receiving yards threshold six times in two seasons, and four of them came against SEC opposition. Last year, he posted 79 yards in the SEC championship game against Georgia, 77 in a loss to Tennessee and 75 in a comeback win on the road against Auburn.

When former Alabama coach Nick Saban retired, Bond made what he called a "business move" and entered the transfer portal.

Once there, his relationship with Sarkisian led him to Texas, he said.

"I just love the way Steve Sarkisian gets his playmakers the ball," Bond said, speaking to the media for the first time since his transfer.

With Bond's help, Texas' offense added explosiveness to its ever-present efficiency against UTSA.

The Longhorns broke off 19 big plays — defined as passing plays of 15-plus yards or rushing plays of 10-plus yards. That's 10 more than the Longhorns had last week against Michigan and four more than they managed in Week 1 against Colorado State, despite Quinn Ewers spending the majority of the game sidelined with an abdominal strain.

Those are the plays that often win big games, and Bond accounted for three of them. Notably, Ryan Wingo was responsible for three, too, including a 75-yard touchdown over the middle of the field from Manning.

"He's a great talent," Bond said of the freshman. "I tell him every day to just make sure you keep the main thing the main thing, take every single day day-by-day because he's going to be a great receiver. We have probably the best wide receiver room in the country, hands down."
