IHSAA boys basketball Fab 15: Center Grove, Brebeuf, HSE among those moving on up

A look at this week’s Fab 15, a weekly ranking of the top high school basketball teams in Central Indiana:

1. Lawrence North (15-0)

The Marion County tournament championship hangover nearly clipped the Wildcats, who needed a three-point play by Azavier Robinson with 12 seconds remaining for a 62-60 win at North Central on Friday night. Lawrence North defeated North Central by 20 points two weeks earlier in the county semifinals. Robinson led the way with 25 points. The Wildcats hosts New Palestine on Wednesday and Hammond Morton on Saturday (4 p.m. start). Previous: 1.

2. Fishers (15-0)

The Tigers rolled to a 70-38 victory at Avon on Friday night and returned home to defeat Carroll (Fort Wayne) 66-50 on Saturday. Keenan Garner had 22 points and seven rebounds in the win over the Orioles and went for 22 points and eight rebounds against Carroll. JonAnthony Hall had 20 points and four assists against Carroll. Up next: at Franklin Central (Friday) and at Carmel (Saturday). Previous: 2.

3. Cathedral (12-1)

Please keep in mind this was written before the City tournament championship Monday night vs. Crispus Attucks. The Irish rolled to wins over Christel House (82-43) and Heritage Christian (75-35) to reach the championship game, getting a 28-point game from Deric Cannady in the latter game. Cathedral will host Don Bosco Prep on Saturday night. Previous: 5.

GROWING GAME: Brady Koehler grew 7 inches. His offers list grew, too.

4. Crispus Attucks (10-3)

Likewise, this is written prior to the City tournament championship. The Tigers rolled to victories over Cardinal Ritter (83-57) and Washington (89-56) to reach the title matchup. The Tigers have a busy week with games at Christel House (Wednesday) and Washington (Thursday) and at home against Ben Davis (Saturday). Previous: 6.

5. Westfield (12-1)

The Shamrocks earned a big victory over Noblesville, 58-54, before falling to Brownsburg (62-56) on Friday and then coming back to defeat Tri-West (68-27) on Saturday. Trey Buchanan had 33 points on 6-for-9 shooting from the 3-point line in the loss to Brownsburg. Up next: vs. Avon (Friday) and vs. Victory College Prep (Saturday). Previous: 3.

6. Noblesville (13-2)

The Millers saw their 10-game winning streak snapped with a 58-54 home loss to Westfield despite 22 points and three assists from Aaron Fine. Noblesville bounced back with a 61-31 win over Franklin Central as sophomore Baron Walker scored 15 points. Tough week ahead with Hamilton Southeastern at home on Friday night and Guerin Catholic at home on Saturday afternoon. Previous: 4.

7. Ben Davis (10-3)

The Giants knocked off Decatur Central 64-48 early in the week as KJ Windham scored 21 points. Ben Davis should be well-rested for a tough weekend ahead against Carmel (at home on Friday) and at Crispus Attucks on Saturday. Previous: 7.

8. Greenfield-Central (15-0)

The Cougars cruised to a victory over Shortridge (72-43) and held off improved Shelbyville, 49-44. Braylon Mullins had 27 points, eight rebounds and five assists against Shortridge. Mullins and Boston Willard each scored 14 points in the win over Shelbyville. Up next: at Pendleton Heights on Friday. Previous: 8.

9. Center Grove (10-4)

The Trojans bump up another three spots after a 47-33 win over Roncalli. Center Grove has won seven of its past eight games with the only loss in overtime to Fishers. This is a one-game week with a trip to Avon on Saturday night. Previous: 12.

10. Brebeuf Jesuit (9-4)

The Braves defeated Metropolitan (78-51) and Guerin Catholic (59-50) to sweep the week. Javawn Brooks had 19 points and seven rebounds in the win over Guerin. The Braves will host Bishop Chatard on Friday night. Previous: 14.

11. North Central (9-5)

The Panthers lost a 62-60 heartbreaker to Lawrence North on Friday night, then came back for a 63-52 win over Muncie Central on Saturday. Up next: at Warren Central (Friday) and vs. Heritage Christian (Saturday). Previous: 11.

12. Franklin (12-2)

The Grizzly Cubs had a big week with a 58-55 overtime win over Whiteland as Micah Davis scored 36 points and hit the game-winning 3-pointer and then knocked off New Palestine, 81-67. Up next: at Martinsville (Friday) and vs. Southport (Saturday). Previous: 13.

13. Warren Central (9-7)

The Warriors defeated Zionsville 57-53 early in the week, then dropped a 60-55 decision at Lawrence Central on Friday. The Warriors looked to get back on track at home on Friday vs. North Central and at Tech on Saturday. Previous: 9.

14. Hamilton Southeastern (11-5)

The Royals knocked off Zionsville (42-35) and Mt. Vernon (48-44) and have now won nine of their past 11. Donovan Hamilton had 18 points and seven rebounds in the win over Zionsville and Nathaniel Orr led the way against Mt. Vernon with 19 points, eight rebounds and four steals. Previous: NR.

15. New Palestine (11-3)

Julius Gizzi had 36 points in New Palestine’s 77-60 win over Roncalli and Moses Haynes added 19. The Dragons lost the following night at Mt. Vernon, 81-67, despite Gizzi and Haynes combining for 46 points. A couple more tough games ahead this week at Noblesville (Friday) and vs. Pendleton Heights (Saturday). Previous: 10.

Dropped out: Franklin Central (15)

Next five in line: Plainfield (11-4), Mt. Vernon (8-7), Guerin Catholic (12-5), Carmel (6-9), Brownsburg (9-8)
