IHSA football scores | Peoria-area highlights, recap from Week 3

It recap time for Week 3 of the Illinois high school football season, and we have our first big upset of the year, a milestone rivalry win and some shootout games across central Illinois involving (who else?) Peoria High.

So, settle in, here is the Journal Star preps experience for Week 3 — your one-stop shop as we look around the Peoria-area football landscape each week during the 2024 high school season:

IHSA football scores | Pekin 34, Dunlap 33

Pekin (2-1) pulled off the Peoria area's first major upset of the season, defeating state-ranked Dunlap 34-33 on Friday night at Eagle Field.

Four-star tight end recruit Mack Sutter caught an 11-yard touchdown pass with 26. 4 seconds remaining. Dunlap (2-1) — ranked No. 1 in the Journal Star power rankings — opted to go for the game-winning two-point conversion, which was intercepted by Pekin to win the game.

IHSA football scores | Peoria High 58, Morris 52

Peoria High and Morris played another shootout, again won by the Lions.

Lions linebacker Gerald Jenkins sealed the win with a late interception, captured by reporter Bill Freskos of shawlocal.com.

These two teams played a Class 5A state semifinal in 2022 won by Peoria High, 76-56.

IHSA football scores | East Peoria 47, Limestone 28

The East Peoria Raiders and first-year coach Sam Durley are 3-0 for the first time since 2014 after a big home win against Mid-Illini Conference opponent Limestone. EP faces Canton (0-3) next week.

Eureka football records | Coach sets program win record

Eureka football coach Jason Bachman became the winningest coach in program history on Friday night, according to a post from the school. The Hornets (3-0) defeated Deer Creek-Mackinaw 47-0 in Week 3.

Bachman now has 60 victories in his 12th season at Eureka, surpassing the previous mark held by Warner McCollum who coached the team from 1961-69.

IHSA football scores | Washington 37, Metamora 7

Washington (1-2) pulled away in the second half to defeat rival Metamora, 37-7, on Friday night at Babcook Field.

Running backs Hunter Reed and Carter Quinn each scored a pair of TDs for the Panthers, who gave the game ball to first-year coach Todd Stevens after he secured his first career win since taking over for the retired Darrell Crouch at the start of 2024.

IHSA football scores | Peoria Notre Dame 54, Champaign Central 15

Notre Dame started the season with a pair of six-point losses before finally getting in the win column Friday with a 54-15 victory against Champaign Central. The Irish (1-2) opened with a 33-27 road loss to Normal West and then lost a home game to Peoria High, 46-40.

Washington-Metamora update: Panthers pulling away

Hunter Reed scored his second touchdown of the game to push Washington's lead to 30-7 with 7:39 left in the rivalry game with Metamora. Washington looks like it will bounce back from a tough start of the season, which started with a home loss to Maple Park Kaneland and a road loss to Kankakee.

Eureka-Dee-Mack update: Hornets gain 516 yards in victory

Ben Lapp ran for 130 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Hornets to a big 47-0 win against Deer Creek-Mackinaw in a game between two previously unbeaten teams. Eureka rolled up 516 offensive yards, according to a post from reporter Steve Suess. Impressive.

Peoria High-Morris update: Lions roaring ahead

In one of the top matchups of the night, Peoria High has scored 20 in a row to take a 34-28 lead against host Morris on Friday night.

The Lions (2-0) and Redskins (2-0) met in the Class 5A state semifinals in 2022, with the Lions winning a wild shootout 76-56 at Peoria Stadium.

East Peoria half way to 3-0 vs Limestone

The East Peoria Raiders lead the Limestone Rockets 21-13 at halftime of their Mid-Illini Conference game at EastSide Centre.

RJ Jackson is leading the way for EP, with 95 rushing yards and two scores. Dalton Oakman has 144 passing yards and a TD to Jackson Ahrens. The Raiders (2-0) are seeking their first 3-0 start since 2014.

Upset alert: Pekin leads Dunlap at halftime

Pekin leads Dunlap 27-14 at halftime of their Mid-Illini Conference opener at Eagle Field.

Dunlap, the No. 1 team in the Journal Star power rankings, jumped to a 14-0 lead before the Dragons scored 27 in a row to take control heading into the break.

Washington vs Metamora updates: Panthers controlling the game

Host Washington leads rival Metamora 10-0 at halftime of their Mid-Illini Conference opener at Babcook Field.

Running back Hunter Reed has the lone touchdown for Washington (0-2), which lost its first two games of the season under first-year coach Todd Stevens. Metamora (2-0) opened its season with wins over Sterling and LaSalle-Peru.

This is the 43rd Mid-Illini Conference meeting between the rivals; the series is tied 21-21. A collection of photos from the rivalry can be found here.

Eureka vs Dee-Mack updates: Hornets in control

In the small-school game of the week, host Eureka leads Deer Creek-Mackinaw 26-0 at halftime in a battle of unbeaten teams.

Ben Lapp, who had a big game last week, has a pair of rushing touchdowns to lead the Hornets (2-0), receiving votes in the Class 3A state rankings. Austin Gerber and Tanner Weigand also have TDs for Eureka.

Metamora vs. Washington: New coach in first game of rivalry

Todd Stevens is in his first year as head coach of the Washington football team, and Friday is his first matchup against neighboring rival Metamora.

Stevens is trying to become the first Washington coach to win his inaugural meeting with Metamora since hall of fame coach John Venturi defeated the Redbirds in 1982 — the first year of the Mid-Illini Conference.

Here's a look at how each of Washington's football coaches fared in their first games against Metamora:

Morton uniforms: It's the great pumpkin for Potters

Morton is the “Pumpkin Capital of the World” because 85 percent of the world’s canned pumpkin is packed in a Libby's plant in town. This week is the village's annual Morton Pumpkin Festival, an annual celebration that has been around nearly 60 years.

And the football team is helping celebrate.

The Potters are wearing jack-o-lantern stickers on their silver helmets this week, along with a special black uniforms that feature the pumpkin face above the numbers on the front. Take a look at the jerseys and the helmet, the latter in action last season:

Metamora-Washington rivalry history

The city of Washington and village of Metamora are neighbors separated by 7 miles of blacktop and have two power football programs whose histories are intertwined. They meet at 7:30 p.m. tonight in Washington — the 43rd meeting in Mid-Illini Conference play. The series record? Tied at 21-21. (Although over that same span, Metamora has won five of six playoff matchups).

The Mid-Illini Conference season kicks off, highlighted by the longstanding rivalry between neighboring Metamora and Washington. Peoria High travels to Morris for a big road game, while Eureka and Deer Creek-Mackinaw match up in a battle of small-school powers. The full Week 3 schedule is here.
