Grizzlies star Ja Morant slighted by inclusion on NBA GM's potential breakout players list

If Ja Morant was looking for external motivation this season, it won't be hard for him to find it. A recent NBA GMs survey conducted by NBA.com may be the latest example.

A survey was released on Tuesday with NBA general managers making predictions for the upcoming season. One of the questions asked about potential players primed for a breakout season. Morant, who ranked third with 10% of the vote, wasn't necessarily excited to be included.

"Respectfully .. why I’m on here?" Morant posted on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Breakout players are usually ones who jumped into stardom unexpectedly. The thing about Morant is, well, he's already done that. Not only is the Grizzlies guard a two-time all star, but he won the NBA's Most Improved Player award in 2022. That award tends to go to players who jump into stardom or are breakout players.

This season feels more like a potential comeback season than a breakout one. Morant only played nine games last season due to injuries and a 25-game suspension for conduct detrimental to the league.

Earlier this summer, Morant's agent and former Grizzlies wing Mike Miller made headlines when he stated, "how soon they forget" when referencing Morant's body of work.

“That’s all I’ll say," Miller said. "He’s about to come for it.”

Morant is currently out for the Grizzlies while dealing with a mild ankle sprain. However, he isn't expected to miss any regular season action when the season begins on Oct. 23 against the Utah Jazz.
